Durham Law School and the Department of Economics seek to appoint an outstanding candidate to contribute to the internationally leading JusTN0W initiative (‘Just Transitions to a Net Zero World’). JustN0W is an ambitious and interdisciplinary initiative funded by a £5 million strategic investment that will see seven academic staff appointed to lead Durham’s commitment to a better and fairer world in the face of climate change, biodiversity loss and environmental degradation. Our initiative brings together academic colleagues across Law, Economics, Computer Science and Natural Sciences to advance the knowledge and the implementation of just transitions to net zero at international, national, and local levels. This post will be a joint appointment between the Law School and the Department of Economics at Durham University.
Applicants must demonstrate high quality research in the field of economics of environmental sustainability, appreciation of the legal and governance aspects surrounding the sustainability discourse and ability to teach our students to an exceptional standard and to fully engage in the services, citizenship, and values of the University. Ability and willingness to engage at the intersection of Law and Economics areas is also highly valued. Key Responsibilities:
To pursue research in Economics of Environmental Sustainability that is high quality in terms of originality, significance and rigour. To make a significant contribution to achieving the objectives of JusTN0W. To develop clear plans for the pursuit of national and international funding opportunities to support research and end-user engagement. To make a significant contribution to capacity building and Continuous Professional Development activities. To play a role in relevant teaching and assessment activities and research supervision and contribute to ongoing curriculum development. Contribute to enhancing the quality of the research environment in the Departments, the wider University and beyond through collaborative research activity. Demonstrate a willingness to contribute to the administrative work, citizenship and values of the Departments. Carry out other duties as specified by the Heads of Department. Person Specification Qualifications – a PhD (or close to completion at the time of application) in Economics or related disciplines. Expertise - evidence of or potential to undertake research and/or teaching on the broad topic of economics of environmental sustainability. Ability and willingness to engage with Law on Sustainability and work in an interdisciplinary team. Income Generation – evidence of engagement in the development of successful research projects and quality research grant proposals, commensurate with career stage. Outputs – evidence of high-quality outputs, some of which is recognised as internationally excellent or world-class. Education contribution - Evidence of engagement with education activities of an academic Department, Faculty or University.
