These positions have been set up to meet the mental health crisis needs of NCL (North Central London) population, defined as those people under the age of 18, who present to A& E departments, pediatric wards, Crisis Hubs and NCL CAMHs clinicians if required.
The post holder will contribute to providing a 7-day crisis service for children and young people experiencing mental health problems. The service will operate (12:00 noon to 12am midnight with possible extension to 24hours in near future) including weekends and Bank Holidays.
Working autonomously within professional guidelines and the overall framework of the CAMHS Services, the post holder will undertake a range of therapeutic tasks individually and jointly with members of the multi-disciplinary NCL CAMHS Crisis Team including: Assess deliberate self-harm (DSH) cases in A& E or on the paediatric wards. Crisis support, intervention and consultation to our community based CAMHS colleagues across NCL and assessments in Crisis Hubs (North and South Hub). Triage young people in A& E and identify whether there are concerns about mental health but where it is not clear that they require a psychiatric assessment. Provide training to A& E staff and paediatric ward staff. The post holder will provide operational management and clinical supervision to band 6 practitioners across NCL when required.
Main duties of the job
Crisis and Liaison Intervention Service To undertake initial mental health and risk assessments of young people following acts of deliberate self-harm. These will take place mainly in A& E, Crisis Hubs and on the paediatric wards. We use Biopsychosocial modality to undertake comprehensive assessments which will inform care plans. To undertake initial mental health and risk assessments following other risky behaviors and urgent mental health presentations, in the A& E departments and the hubs. To consult with staff at the Tier 3 CAMHS teams to provide further specialist assessment if necessary. To follow the assessment protocol for such cases and to complete the clinical record on the relevant (Electronic patient records). To identify and respond appropriately to child protection issues within Local Authority, Pan- London and national Safeguarding Children guidelines. To provide training to the mental health leads of children's wards, A & E staff and others as appropriate.
CAMHS Tier 3 Work To formulate and implement care packages for the treatment and management of the clients mental health problems, based on an appropriate conceptual framework and evidence-based models of practice. To evaluate and make decisions about treatment options in consultation with the multi-disciplinary team taking into account both theoretical and therapeutic models. To act as a co-worker with other members of the multidisciplinary team as appropriate. To provide advice, guidance and consultation to other professionals working in other agencies and contribute to multi-agency care planning. To maintain clinical records appropriately and in line with the Trust policy. To ensure effective verbal and written communication with all staff and clients in order to maximise user involvement in the delivery of care and treatment. To comply with London Child Protection Procedures on the management of child protection issues as well as North Central London NHS Foundation Trust internal procedure.
Administration To keep up to date comprehensive clinical notes and prepare formal documents such as letters, discharge summaries and reports. To complete Handover documentation at end of each shift. The Trust operates the EPR electronic patient records system. All records are to be kept on EPR and other Hospital Patient record Systems, in accordance with Trust policy. To maintain and record client contact statistics. To ensure administrative tasks are completed within the time scales set down in the service standards. To attend team meetings, huddles, supervision support sessions and reviews as agreed. To contribute to the formulation and evaluation of policies and the development of ideas for changing policies as appropriate.
Training and Development To undertake mandatory and statutory training as required by Trust policy. To contribute and commit to undertaking an annual Development Review/appraisal. To undertake personal development as identified in the Personal Development Plan (PDP). To participate in continuing professional development, monitoring requirements and make recommendations for the most appropriate model of service delivery. To receive professional, clinical, and managerial supervision from the Lead Clinician for CAMHS crisis team. To participate in annual performance appraisal and review, in line with Agenda for Change and Knowledge and Skills Framework.
Service Development To participate with the NCL CAMHS OOHCS Team Manager in developing the Crisis Service within CAMHS. To participate in the collation, analysis and dissemination of statistics relating to the activity of the service and plan against service targets, e.g. reduction in use of referrals to inpatient services. The post holder will positively promote flexibility and integration between the crisis team and other CAMHS teams.

TRAINING & QUALIFICATIONS
Essential Qualification at degree level or equivalent and registration with relevant professional body with a core profession clinical/counselling Psychology, psychotherapy, systemic family psychotherapy social work, nursing, occupational therapy. Relevant training or qualification in child and adolescent mental health. Relevant training on safeguarding and child protection.
Desirable Training in one of the main therapeutic modalities.
EXPERIENCE
Essential Experience of clinical and risk assessment and treatment of children and young people across the full range of care settings, including outpatient, community, primary care and in patient settings. Previous experience of working in CAMHS, with proven track record of working with children, young people and their families offering assessment and stabilisation during periods of high risk. Experience of case load management. Experience of working in a multidisciplinary team.
Desirable Experience of teaching colleagues of other disciplines. Experience of working in an adolescent in-patient setting.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
Essential Working knowledge in at least one model of therapeutic work (e.g. Systemic, CBT, SFT, Psychodynamic). Teaching skills in clinical settings. Capacity to deal with working conditions that may occasionally involve verbal abuse and frequent exposure to highly emotive material such as child abuse and family breakdown. Awareness of current national guidelines and policies in the field of CAMHS. Good computer skills and knowledge of patient management systems. Accurate record keeping. Evidence of continuing professional development.
Desirable Specific knowledge of current issues for Adolescent mental health. Experience in using CBT techniques Experience in setting up and facilitating groups. Specific knowledge of current issues for Adolescent mental health.
