The programme comprises the Foundation Degree and BEng (Hons) Nuclear Engineering, awarded by Lancaster University/Blackpool and The Fylde College - a UK top 10 university. Our apprentices will achieve Degree Level in Nuclear Engineering within our sophisticated plant, with the course studied on a modular basis, leading to the Degree qualification after 5 years.
The programme content is delivered over one day a week, arranged to fit around your workplace schedule and the demands of your placement area. You will also be expected to undertake a significant amount of independent study, with opportunities to develop your academic skills and literacy.
The first six months provide the foundations, where you'll learn basic engineering skills including bench fitting, electrical circuits, and machining to ensure accuracy to specifications. This prepares you to work in various site locations across Westinghouse - Springfields. You will start a specialised training programme, progressing in the final months to demonstrate your competency in knowledge, skills, and behaviours to complete your apprenticeship and prepare for your final assessment integrated within your degree programme.
On-the-job training across the site will give you the opportunity to gain knowledge and practical skills guided by experienced professionals. The mentors you work with will support your development and learning in your work environment. The Training Academy has a dedicated individual to support you during your apprenticeship, along with a mentor in your working department.
Teaching methods include lectures, seminars, group tutorials, and working in small groups in our nuclear simulator and materials and manufacturing labs. You will also have open access to our online programme resources.
The University Centre (Blackpool & The Fylde College's Energy HQ) will allocate you your own personal tutor who will guide you throughout the degree course, support your development, advise you on future career paths, and help you get the most out of your time as an apprentice.
