Main purpose of job: We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled postdoctoral researcher to join the department of Cell & Molecular Sciences, working in the group of Dr Yunqing Yu. This four-year project is fully funded by the UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship. The research aims to investigate the molecular mechanisms and evolutionary basis of grain shattering (disarticulation) in the Triticeae, a grass tribe with significant economic importance. The work will integrate molecular and developmental biology, physiology, and phylogenetics to better understand this critical trait in crop domestication and improvement. The postholder will benefit from an exciting opportunity to collaborate with a dynamic group of scientists associated with the International Barley Hub (IBH), a flagship of the James Hutton Institute. The IBH provides a platform for excellence in barley science and fosters collaboration across scientific, industrial and commercial sectors. Main duties of post holder: Analyse the morphology and physiology of disarticulation zones in Triticeae species. Elucidate the molecular mechanisms regulating the development and evolution of disarticulation zones. Disseminate research outcomes through publications and public communications. Participate in related research projects within the group. Contribute to the development of new ideas and grant proposals. PERSON SPECIFICATION Essential PhD in plant biology, botany, developmental biology, molecular biology or a related field. Expertise in plant development and/or molecular genetics. Proficiency in molecular biology techniques, including RNA-Seq library construction. Experience with plant tissue dissection using a dissecting microscope. Strong communication and writing skills, demonstrated by high-quality publications. Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research and to work in a team. Willingness and ability to learn new skills. Desirable Experience in studying evolutionary development in plants. Expertise in histology and electron microscopy. Experience with genomic, transcriptomic, and/or evolutionary analyses. Evidence of leadership, mentoring, and outreach.
