Main duties of the job The Sussex Pathology Network Programme team is looking for a dynamic Head of Programme to lead the complex, high profile and strategically important projects within the programme, working with internal and external stakeholders over 9-months in 2025. The role will involve balancing a varied workload, with projects in a range of phases, from planning, implementation and transition to operational go-live delivery. This will require a collaborative approach with colleagues from all professional backgrounds, in clinical, operational and corporate roles, within provider and commissioning organisations, and an ability to work independently and flexibly to deliver progress against project objectives. Job description Job responsibilities The Head of Programme will lead on a number of projects as summarised in the job description. The postholder will lead and coordinate project activities, chair programme meetings, develop and manage project documentation, timelines and risks. Analytical thinking to process complex information is essential as well as excellent and responsive verbal and written communication skills with staff at all levels. The allocated projects require a flexible, dynamic team player to respond to changing priorities. This role plays a senior leadership role within the programme team and is expected to line manage some members of the team as well as support and develop other team members who may not be under their direct line management. Person Specification Skills and Capabilities Essential Plans and organises a broad range of complex activities, formulating and adjusting plans to reflect changing circumstances. Inputs to strategic plans across NHS and within the specific teams. Good use of available information sources to enable efficient and effective planning. Ability to work under pressure and to tight and often changing deadlines. Skills for direct line management and job management. Skills for delivering results through managing through others and using a range of levers in the absence of direct line management responsibility. Skilled analytically & able to work in spreadsheets and pivot table preparation. Numerate and able to problem solve across activity and financial fields. Able to teach/train junior members of staff in the skills of excel, analysing data and provision of performance information. Problem solving skills and ability to respond to sudden unexpected demands. Ability to analyse complex information and situations and develop a range of options. Evidence of preparation of successful Business Cases. Demonstrable success in complex change management and implementing new ways of working. Qualifications Essential Educated to masters level or equivalent level of experience of working at a senior level in specialist area. Highly specialist knowledge and understanding of programme and performance management - MSP Practitioner or equivalent. Better Business Case (BBC) Practitioner. In-depth professional knowledge in a number of disciplines e.g. financial management, performance management, information systems, staff management acquired through training and experience over extended period. Evidence of post qualifying and continuing professional development. Must have an understanding of the background to and aims of current healthcare policy and appreciate the implications of this on engagement. Should have an appreciation of the relationship between the Department of Health, the Strategic Health Authority and individual provider and commissioning organisations. Experience Essential Experience of working with Stakeholders to develop performance improvement plans and to develop plans for innovation and opening up the market. Previously responsible for a budget, involved in budget setting and working knowledge of financial processes. Experience of managing relationships with a range of different stakeholders. Proven experience of preparing and if required presenting at board level.
