Job overview:

Rapiscan Cargo and Vehicle (CVI) division is seeking a highly skilled Technical Business Development Director to spearhead the development of commercial R&D activities. This role focuses on identifying and establishing opportunities within the UK and EU for funded mechanisms to develop low TRL (1-6) technologies in alignment with the CVI innovation roadmap. The ideal candidate will possess a PhD in a scientific discipline, preferably Physics, and have a proven track record in securing funding from external agencies, including government bodies, academic institutions, industry collaborators, and research councils. Responsibilities This role requires a strategic approach to business development, leveraging existing networks and building new relationships to support the division’s innovation goals.

Identify and manage a portfolio of Commercial R&D hubs. Develop relationships with key stakeholders at the various hubs to gain insight into technology development preferences. Identify opportunities to enter new business verticals leveraging the wide range of technology capabilities within Rapiscan.

The successful candidate will be responsible for drafting high-quality proposals with substantial technical content to secure funding for advancing technologies to higher maturity levels. The candidate will work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment with the CVI innovation roadmap and will be instrumental in driving the commercial success of R&D initiatives. Communicate to Senior Management through Project Reviews, or other means, updates and snapshots of Commercial R&D projects including highlighting issues in a timely manner. Provide feedback to Sales and Marketing regarding the status and expected delivery of products to the market along with specifications and expected budgets. Develop a formal process for disseminating and seeking approval on new programs of work across the wider business – including technical justification, ROI, predicted profitability, specification lockout, market growth etc. Work closely with the S&T team of Physicists, data scientists and research technicians. Qualifications PhD in Physics or Equivalent. 5-10+ years Commercial R&D experience or equivalent. Knowledge of x-ray imaging techniques would be an advantage.
