Senior/ Principal Ecologist Derby

Seeking a new Principal Ecologist to join an expanding ecology division based on the outskirts of Derby.

Rather than replacing someone, this is a new strategic position, required to meet the demands of a growing division and increasing workload. The role is becoming available as our senior staff within the division take higher level leadership roles within the company.

You will work to manage senior ecologists within a wider team of around 20 ecologists. You will be supported in your role by the Head of Ecology and the company Directors along with team leaders and senior ecologists working within the department.

Project work is plentiful and varied, representing the renewables, residential, commercial, rural diversification, and energy sectors on project work – based on delivering a high-quality service to an increasingly large number of retained clients.

This is an exciting time to join a company growing in stature and commercial value where you can be part of a carefully nurtured culture. The role is underpinned by a list of exceptional perks and benefits alongside a competitive salary.

This role is perfectly suited to someone who currently holds the same position but is seeking a fresh challenge or someone seeking the step up to a Principal role.

Principal Ecologist – Primary Responsibilities

Direct management and mentoring responsibility for senior ecologists. Ensuring the coordination and delivery of habitat and species surveys. Preparation of high-quality reports including preliminary ecological assessments (PEA), ecological impact assessments (EcIA), documents to support biodiversity net gain, condition documents, and bespoke documents for planning purposes. Hold survey or mitigation licences and have experience in producing detailed mitigation licence applications. Experience of production of Habitat Regulation Assessment (HRA) documents is advantageous but not essential. Provide a high level of technical expertise and support across the division. Oversee the processes and procedures of the team, ensuring the delivery of high-quality outputs. Prepare, review and issue quotations, tenders, and bids. Assist the Head of Ecology in the successful development of the division. Contribute to the strategy for staff development and training. Specification

The successful candidate will: Provide a demonstrated progression within the ecology consultancy industry. Provide evidence of managing and contributing to complex technical project work. Demonstrate detailed knowledge of the planning system. Demonstrate experience in staff/team management. Demonstrate experience in client liaison and management. Demonstrate a keenness for supporting and aiding staff progression. Provide evidence of the importance of maintaining and developing a company’s brand and culture. A full membership of CIEEM is advantageous but not essential.
