We’re looking for an exceptional Extremes Scientist Industrial Placement to help us make a difference to our planet. This is an exciting opportunity to join the Met Office on a 12-month Year in Industry placement, developing your skills and knowledge and ensuring you gain the most value possible from your experience with us. As our Extremes Scientist Industrial Placement, the job may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in the office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and the location advertised will be your contractual place of work.

Our Industrial Placement scheme offers ambitious and capable undergraduates the opportunity to gain valuable experience working alongside diverse and highly skilled experts in their field. You’ll be working on projects that really matter and will make a difference.
You will work in the Monthly to Decadal predictability team on a project exploring trends in climate extremes (e.g. temperature, precipitation) associated with a changing climate. Recent years have seen a run of record-breaking extreme weather, such as the western North America heatwave in June 2021, which saw daily maximum temperature anomalies of up to 20 degrees C in some areas, and the UK heatwave of July 2022, where temperatures of greater than 40 degrees C were reached in the UK for the first time on record.
However, the rare nature of extreme events presents challenges in assessing their frequency and trends over time. The aim of this project is to examine trends in extremes in large, initialized climate model ensembles. The large sample size available is essential for studying rare, extreme events and will give a more robust understanding of the relationship between trends in extremes and the mean, and the physical reasons behind it. The ability of climate models to capture the observed relationship will also be assessed. The outcome will be a paper or report summarizing the results.
Quantify trends in observational and climate model data.
Identify ‘hot-spot’ regions which have significant trends in extremes, and explore their statistical significance and associated dynamics.
Identify any regions with discrepancies between climate models and observations.
Summarize results in a report and oral presentation.

Essential Criteria, skills and experience:
Significant knowledge in a physical, mathematical, computational or environmental sciences subject.
Experience of writing or modifying code, such as Python, C++ or Fortran.
Ability to work well within a team to deliver shared objectives.
Evidence of good communication skills via written reports and oral presentations, commensurate with role level.
