An exciting opportunity has arisen to work within the MCCN Haemato-Oncology laboratory (HODS), within Liverpool University Hospital's NHS Foundation Trust. The Merseyside and Cheshire HODS service is a peer review compliant haemato-oncology diagnostic lab, providing state-of-the-art specialist testing for haematological malignancy. The service hosts Flow cytometry, bone marrow aspirate/peripheral blood morphology, histology and immunohistochemistry, and molecular genetic testing. We are looking for a motivated HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist, with extensive experience in leukaemia immunophenotyping/flow cytometry and excellent interpersonal skills, to join our group. The successful candidate will have the ability to critically analyse and interpret immunophenotyping data. The laboratory is UKAS-accredited, currently performing over 18,000 diagnostic tests per annum across all testing modalities and is also actively involved in research and teaching. The candidate will work alongside the lead Clinical Scientist in the section and will also work within a close and friendly team of other HCPC registered scientists. Main duties of the job
To lead the immunophenotyping section of the HODS service, including the development and maintenance of appropriate UKAS accredited diagnostic tests for immunophenotyping of leukaemia/lymphoma. To collaborate with the other scientific/technical/clinical staff. To process patient samples and provide interpretation of the results of highly complex diagnostic investigations. To take responsibility for their own work, and to undertake an appropriate proportion of the total workload of the laboratory. To provide a high level of expertise in immunophenotypic analysis of diagnostic and follow up samples, using national/international guidelines. To prepare standard and complex reports for authorisation by consultant/Clinical Scientists. To review and develop working practices. To assist during UKAS accreditation visits. To provide information for annual management review. To train junior laboratory staff as required. To undertake appropriate research and development of analytical procedures, maintaining up-to-date scientific knowledge. To maintain core competencies and participate in appropriate CPD activities. Job Summary In conjunction with senior laboratory staff, the post-holder will undertake the scientific duties and responsibilities of a clinical scientist in the provision of a comprehensive, modern, high quality Haemato-Oncology diagnostic service, including clinical genetics, at Liverpool University Hospitals Foundation Trust. This will involve delivering a range of specialist immunophenotyping diagnostic tests for the diagnosis of haematological malignancies. To collaborate with the other scientific and technical staff to ensure accurate, timely, and efficient delivery of the highest quality of service to patients. To liaise with admin staff regarding issues relating to sample admin as required. To deal with enquiries from other healthcare professionals, relating to patient and sample information and ascertaining additional clinical details, in an accurate and courteous manner. To maintain close links with clinical staff and represent the service at multidisciplinary meetings within the Trust. To provide and receive highly complex sensitive or possibly contentious information. To assist laboratory management with the functioning and effectiveness of the Quality Management System.
