Job overview

The purpose of this role is to provide timely assessment of children and young people who present in crisis. The post holder will provide timely assessments and brief interventions to Children and Young People who present in a crisis and will; • Provide support, advice and education to the Emergency Departments/Paediatric Wards/General Wards to build knowledge and skills of staff within these settings in the care and treatment of children and young people with mental health problems, and to ensure timely and effective treatment and discharge. • Manage their own workload, and work within clearly defined occupational policies and procedures. • Responsible for the initial assessment and subsequent facilitation of admission to the Tier 4 CAMHS Unit or AMHS if appropriate. Main duties of the job

First point of contact for general hospital colleagues, responding to requests to assess children and young people’s clinical needs, demonstrating safe, clinical decision-making and expert care, referring to the Lead Nurse and/or on call medical team if appropriate. Ensure a timely transfer to community CAMHS Teams as appropriate. Will work closely with the community CAMHS team during office hours, responding to emergency referrals of young people presenting in crisis. Ensure young people are seen in a timely manner and risk is assessed and a management plan is developed accordingly. Qualifications and/or Knowledge

Registered Professional Practitioner e.g. Occupational Therapist, Social Worker, and Nurse. Evidence of relevant post-registration Continuing Professional Development. Specialist knowledge and experience within specialist area to postgraduate Diploma level equivalency. Working knowledge of Clinical Governance. Advanced knowledge of Mental Health conditions. Knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act, Mental Health (Wales) Measure 2010. Knowledge of audit and research. Knowledge of Adult Protection and Child Protection policies and procedures. Knowledge of Clinical Governance and application in practice. Knowledge of Infection Prevention and Control Procedures. Teaching and Assessing qualification. Working knowledge of Primary Care Teams. Knowledge of audit tools. Experience

Substantial post-registration experience including of working with children and young people with mental health problems in a variety of settings. Substantial experience of working with children and young people with complex and diverse mental health needs. Substantial experience of assessing children and young people presenting with challenging high-risk behaviours. Ability to formulate risk management plans. Clinical and theoretical teaching in a range of contexts. Evidence of implementing innovation and change in clinical practice. Evidence of undertaking clinical audit and/or research in clinical practice. Experience and management of working with families in distress and high expressed emotion. Experience in a range of clinical settings. Aptitude and Abilities

Organisational ability and time management skills. Advanced clinical assessment skills of children and young people presenting with mental health difficulties. Crisis assessment skills. Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to prioritise and problem solve. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to present information clearly. Facilitation/Presentation and Teaching skills. Clinical competency across a range of clinical skills. Ability to demonstrate sound clinical knowledge and awareness of current evidence base relevant to the area of practice. Sound working knowledge of the Welsh Government’s Strategies, National Frameworks and NICE Guidelines. Ability to speak Welsh. IT Skills. Awareness of wider health and social care agenda. Values
