We are looking to appoint an Advanced Specialist Occupational Therapist in Gender Healthcare to join the West of England Specialist Gender Identity Clinic (WESGIC) based at The Laurels in Exeter. This is a new substantive post following substantial investment in the clinic.

The WESGIC is a centre of excellence for the provision of advice and treatment for gender dysphoria for people aged 18 and older. We accept referrals from across the country and provide personalised care and treatment plans to meet our patients' individual needs.

The post holder will be an expert practitioner, providing OT assessments and interventions within the gender service. They will act as a resource for the team providing professional guidance and participating in the development of the service.

Networking skills are essential requirements for working collaboratively and in representing the organisation and the profession within this role.

The successful candidate will ensure the monitoring and maintenance of professional standards within the context of a clinical governance framework. They will possess excellent interpersonal skills and have a flexible approach to service delivery. We are looking for a team player who enjoys working in a multi-disciplinary setting with highly experienced and skilled staff.

Main duties of the job

Provide advanced specialist OT clinical input into the delivery of care and treatment at the Gender Service. Offer assessments and interventions for transgender patients, requiring a clinician with specialist skills to assess patients' needs, analyse and formulate treatment plans within a multi-disciplinary framework. Work as part of the MDT to support patients in line with the NHS England national service specification for gender healthcare. Lead in the specialist area of Occupational Therapy intervention in the Gender Service and contribute to the development of specialist service and related policies. Clinically supervise OTs, Named Professionals, and Peer Support Workers working in the Gender service; lead peer supervision and continuing professional development of OT staff. Demonstrate active clinical and managerial leadership skills within the team, providing education and supervision, where required, to junior team members and other professionals and students. Manage a caseload of people with complex needs autonomously within professional guidelines and the overall framework of the services' policies and procedures.

Experience

Essential

Significant specialised experience of working with people with gender dysphoria, and individual patient case management responsibility. Demonstrates satisfactory clinical expertise for the banding. Line management of staff. Experience in the application of OT models to service users with complex needs. Significant experience working in community settings in MDTs. Ability to manage a complex caseload and competing priorities.

Desirable

Experience of MDT working.

Qualifications

Essential

Diploma or degree in Occupational Therapy. Maintains current registration with HCPC. Willingness to undertake new clinical practices, education and training that will enhance service delivery. Training in gender healthcare. Training in gender diversity. Demonstrate continued professional development to maintain professional registration. Clinical Practice Educator for student placements.

Desirable

MSc in Advanced Occupational Therapy or relevant to gender healthcare. Diploma in Gender Healthcare.

Knowledge

Essential

Knowledge of the interface of psychological and physical aspects of healthcare. Highly developed knowledge of theory and practice of OT within gender healthcare. Experience of working in gender healthcare.

Desirable

Knowledge of the legal, social, and societal aspects of gender diversity. An understanding of multi-disciplinary and multi-agency working across health and social care with voluntary and independent sector.
