Job overview

The ward manager has overall responsibility for the safe and timely delivery of SACT treatments within Ward 202. Working managerially and clinically, the ward manager provides visible leadership and support to the Unit nurses, leads service improvements and actively contributes to patient safety and high standards of care. The ward manager will ensure that incidents are reported and complaints are dealt with in a timely manner. The ward manager will ensure that the unit has the correct levels of staff and appropriate skills mix, taking corrective measures if required, and reviewing staffing on a daily basis. The ward manager will ensure that sickness is managed according to policy and staff wellbeing is supported. Main duties of the job

The Ward manager has continuing 24 hour responsibility for the management of the clinical area including assessment of care needs, the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care and the setting of standards. The Ward Sister/Charge Nurse/Midwife will facilitate innovative and evidence based nursing/midwifery practice through professional leadership and supporting the clinical team. The Ward manager will act as a credible and professional role model and encourage and empower other staff to develop both personally and professionally and achieve their maximum potential, working both managerially and clinically. The Ward manager will liaise with all members of the multidisciplinary team and facilitate a collaborative approach to patient care. The Ward manager will report directly to the Matron. Facilitate communication, which results in clear responsibilities being identified within the multi-professional team. There is a requirement to exchange verbal and written information with patients, staff and carers requiring tact and diplomacy. Ensure appropriate systems are in place for the safe and timely discharge of patients including EDD, patient choice leaflets and that patients and their carers are consulted with regarding discharge planning. Attend and be an active member of Directorate/Divisional meetings and working groups. Ensure that patient concerns are addressed on the ward/department and work with the Patient Advisory and Liaison Service (PALS) and patient forums. Knowledge, Training & Experience

Degree level qualification in Health/Nursing Related Studies Experience of teaching and assessing Formal leadership and management training Minimum of 3 years post registration experience to include 1 year experience of taking charge of a ward/department on a shift basis. Ability to lead change and lead new ways of working Ability to do a minimum of 2 clinical shifts/week Ability to participate in Senior Staffing rota for the Division (may include weekends) Managerial

To be aware of available resources to promote the efficient management of the ward or department and be responsible to manage all resources within budgets. To participate in the timely admission and discharge of patients - liaising with other agencies to ensure continuity of care between hospital and community. To ensure the safekeeping of patient's property and valuables in accordance with agreed policy. To have an understanding of the UHNM policy regarding any complaint received from a patient or their relatives. To maintain accurate and concise records - including patient data, Adverse Incident forms and to supply such statistical information as is requested by senior managers. Clinical and Quality

Assess the care needs of patients, ensuring a continuity of care; developing, implementing and evaluating individual care plans. Provide holistic care and all types of therapies through the different routes of administration. Ensure that care activities are research-based or best practice and in keeping with changes in the field of activity. Participate in clinical supervision if post holder wishes, and reflective practice. Person specification

Qualifications

Registered Nurse on NMC register Formal leadership/management training or equivalent experience Evidence of higher level study at Masters Level Skills and experience

SACT clinical experience with in-depth knowledge of the drugs and its effects Ability to work autonomously and within the MDT Ability to motivate and support others to achieve goals Experience of facilitating staff engagement interventions with groups of staff or teams Ability to maintain confidentiality and deal with situations in a sensitive manner Personal attributes
