The Role An exciting opportunity has arisen for 2 dedicated and experienced Social Workers to join our Complex Intervention and Treatment Team (CITT). CITT is an integrated team (North Somerset Council Adult Care and Avon & Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS) responsible for the health and social care of older adults with mental health problems. The postholders will be based within the Adult Social Services and Housing Directorate/Avon and Wiltshire Partnership at North Somerset Council, working in the Mental Health Team, which is responsible for meeting the health and social care needs of people with a severe enduring mental illness. This involves the provision of advice and information, carrying out assessments of need, preparing Care plans, providing support and a range of personal social services to users and carers. AMHP's within the Team fulfil the statutory functions of the Local Authority under the Mental Health Act 1983. Working with people with severe mental illness will involve supporting the most vulnerable members of the community, with a range of complex needs, requiring a highly skilled approach in assessing risk, treatment and need. The postholder will engage and work with service users and their carers to achieve the best possible outcome for their future quality of life. In this role, you will assess, within the relevant legislation, the risk, health and care needs of service users, including carers of individuals, who have a range of mental health problems, planning, implementing and evaluating appropriate action, negotiating for and co-ordinating the application of resources and/or if necessary, provision of service. If a qualified Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP), to provide an Authority wide AMHealth Professional service under the Mental Health Act, for the Assessment of mentally ill service users. To ensure that there is no infringement of the Human Rights Act. Key Responsibilities: As a Mental Health Social Worker in CITT you will be responsible for care co-ordinating a caseload of older adults with severe and enduring mental health problems, both functional and organic. Undertaking assessments under the Care Act, Mental Capacity Act and if an AMHP, the Mental Health Act. Co-ordinating and providing appropriate interventions, including commissioning care provision. To safeguard vulnerable service users; undertaking risk assessment and management plans. This position is exempt under the provisions of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions) Order 1975 and is subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check. Valid driving licence and own transport, or be able to provide alternative, suitable method of travel is an essential condition for this role. About You We are looking for an individual who is passionate about working in secondary mental health care for older adults and who possesses the following skills and experience: Essential Criteria: Social Work Qualification (Certificate, Diploma, or BSc [Hons]). Approved social worker experience under the 1983 Mental Health Act. Experience with individuals with serious and enduring mental illness. Proficiency in at least two social work skill areas. Knowledge of severe mental illness symptoms, impacts, and interventions (medical, psychosocial, and therapeutic). Willingness to travel widely within/outside North Somerset and work flexible hours. Resilience to cope with responsibilities and work environments. Problem-solving skills and adaptability to unexpected situations. Analytical ability for complex individual/social scenarios. Decision-making in complex, uncertain situations. Effective communication (phone and written reports). Capability to plan and evaluate user programs. Additional skills/qualities as advertised. Personal Skills: Ability to build and maintain relationships with clients and other agencies. Understanding of emotions and emotional needs. Warmth, care, firmness, and control as needed. Flexible and accepting disposition. Resilience under pressure and emotional stress. Adaptability to respond to short-notice requests. Teamwork and collaboration skills. Acceptance of statutory responsibilities (e.g., 1983 Mental Health Act) to assist or protect service users. Competence in risk assessment, management, and appropriate risk-taking. Aware of procedural and accountability standards. Initiative and self-reliance. Desirable Criteria: Commitment to personal development and use of training opportunities. Experience working with older adults and individuals with severe mental health issues (functional and organic). Background in counselling, advising, or supporting people (voluntary or paid). Training in evidence-based therapeutic approaches. Skills and experience in group work. Familiarity with the Care Program Approach and commissioning care packages. Experience in multi-disciplinary teams. Proficiency in preparing reports for Mental Health Tribunals and attending tribunals. Demonstrated experience and skills from previous roles. Contribution to policy and practice development. For Level 9: Evidence of qualification and recent practice as an approved social worker/AMHP.
