Applications are invited from enthusiastic individuals with a proven background of working in a Cellular Pathology environment, with the associated education and competency, to join this friendly, well-equipped Cellular Pathology department. The laboratory processes approximately 28,000 samples per year, providing essential services to the Hywel Dda University Health Board.

The post holder will work alongside the wider Cellular Pathology team to fulfil the daily operational requirements of this busy department. The central Histology laboratory service is situated on the Glangwili Hospital site in Carmarthen with a small satellite team based at the Prince Philip Hospital Llanelli. This role will require occasional working between sites.

The post holder will be educated to an appropriate MSc level or have equivalent experience with an IBMS Specialist Diploma in Histology, be up to date with developments in their discipline and be able to demonstrate relevant CPD in accordance with HCPC.

The post holder will have extensive relevant experience in Histology with a significant number of years experience working in NHS laboratories.

Main duties of the job The successful post holder will section manage and take responsibility for the day-to-day running of the Histology section of the Cellular Pathology Laboratory. They will be responsible for providing specialist advice to users of the service, evaluating new methodologies, developing, growing and optimising the service in conjunction with Cellular Pathology Service Manager and Consultant staff.

The successful candidate will also be jointly responsible for the management of staff absence and annual leave. The post holder will be responsible for the development of the service and ensuring that it is robust and responsive to the needs of our users. They will provide professional, technical and managerial leadership to all staff in Histology and will be responsible for training, assessing and ensuring competence, monitoring work practice, in accordance with agreed standards as set by United Kingdom Accreditation Services (UKAS) Limited.

Person Specification Qualifications & Knowledge Essential BSc Honours Degree (or equivalent) recognised for State Registration Registration with Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC). MSc in Biomedical Science, or equivalent qualification/experience. Evidence of ongoing participation in CPD. Good knowledge of current professional issues.

Desirable Fellowship of The Institute of Biomedical Science Certificate in Supervisory Management

Experience Essential In depth experience and wide understanding and practice of Cellular Pathology techniques. Evidence of supervisory practice within a laboratory setting. Training and experience in IHC and dissection.

Desirable Understanding of complex specialist laboratory techniques

Other Essential Ability to travel within geographical area as required. Flexible to meet needs of the service
