We are looking for an extremely motivated, confident, flexible and passionate individual with excellent communicational and leadership skills, who has experience/knowledge in oncology or working with oncology patients, to join the Macmillan Acute Oncology team.

Main duties of the job As a Macmillan Acute Oncology CNS, you will work very closely with all staff involved in the care of cancer patients in particular, Oncologists, Acute Medical Assessment Unit, AED and the Cancer & Specialist Palliative Care MDT members. Liaising closely with both tertiary and primary care partners.

The extremely motivated post holder will require highly developed interpersonal, communication and facilitation skills, having a strong focus on attention to detail. They must be able to demonstrate sound leadership skills along with vision and the ability to influence others in the provision of high standards of acute oncology care for all patients and their families/carers.

The post holder will be innovative and participate in improving service development through audit and peer review measures. The post holder will be an integral member of the Malignancy of Unknown Origin/Cancer of Unknown Primary (MUO/CUP) multidisciplinary team. In return for your commitment the successful candidate will be offered professional development opportunities and support from both the trust and Macmillan Cancer Support.

You need to be a registered first level nurse with the NMC, have a relevant degree and either have completed or be willing to undertake the Non-Medical Prescribing course and other relevant modules such as clinical assessment skills. The role requires supporting the teaching of the multi-professional teams.

Job description Job responsibilities The post holder will improve the care of patients with complications of cancer and recent cancer treatment including those presenting with oncological emergencies. This includes early recognition, better treatment, and rapid referral back to oncology/tumour specific team and/or specialist palliative care team as appropriate. Work autonomously to assess plan, implement and evaluate programmes of evidence based nursing care.

Demonstrate effective time management and organisational skills to ensure patients are seen within the required time frame.

Ensure and advise on the appropriate investigation of patients who may be suitable for treatment of Cancer of Unknown Primary (CUP) cancers or best supportive care - targeted investigations, rapid triage of patients into specialist oncology or palliative care.

With the support of the Trust's Lead Cancer Team establish and deliver the Acute Oncology Service for relevant cancer patients in line with national guidance and the requirements of the cancer peer review process.

Undertake the role of an expert practitioner, to provide expert advice to patients and health professionals within primary and secondary care settings, with regards to the Acute Oncology Service.

The role of the Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is multifaceted incorporating such key functions as policy and standards development, practice development, education, research and professional development. The ultimate aim is the provision of a cost effective, efficient high quality service that meets the needs of the acute oncology and CUP patient and their family/carers.
