St Albans Cathedral is recruiting for a Sustainability Projects Officer. This is a new full-time post at an exciting time of growth and development in the life of St Albans Cathedral.
St Albans Cathedral stands over where Alban, Britain’s first Christian saint, was buried after giving his life for his faith over 1700 years ago. The Cathedral is a major site of pilgrimage and worship to this day, welcoming people of all ages and from many different backgrounds attracting in excess of 550,000 visitors in 2023 from the United Kingdom and abroad. It has a rich and unique heritage, reaching over an unrivalled stretch of national history.
The Cathedral has secured funding from the national church to support its work towards environmental and financial sustainability. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the role will support the Cathedral in major areas that will help to secure the Cathedral’s long-term sustainability. This role will bring operational oversight and direction to the overall programme for environmental and financial sustainability.
This role is a key part of the first phase of the Cathedral’s ongoing plans to work towards Net Zero Carbon by 2030. The role will bring expertise, build capacity, and set in place decarbonisation plans, as well as manage an initial set of projects related to this area of work. While this role is not a fundraising role, some involvement is expected with the Head of Development & Fundraising in securing the funding needed for the work to go ahead.
Alongside the environmental project work, the role will project manage identified areas for development within the Cathedral’s property portfolio for long-term financial and environmental sustainability. Therefore, a knowledge of buildings-related project management is required. Lastly, the role will provide sustainability project management within the wider framework of the Cathedral’s capital project when it is launched in 2026. All these projects are linked to the Cathedral’s Vision and Priorities for 2024 -2029.
Working through the Cathedral’s Fabric Advisory Committee and Property Committee, this role will also have working relationships, outside of the Cathedral staff team, with the Diocesan Church Buildings Team, the Diocesan Environment Officer, the Diocesan Clergy Housing Team, the Church of England’s central Environmental Team, professional consultants such as Architects and Engineers, and statutory consultees e.g., Historic England, Church Buildings Council, local planning authorities, and funding bodies.
For a candidate with clearly transferable knowledge, we would be willing to assist in gaining first-hand knowledge and learning relevant to the specific portfolio covered by this post. If you are passionate and informed about reducing carbon emissions and addressing climate change within the buildings sector, possess strong operational planning and project management skills, and have experience in carbon-reducing strategies, we encourage you to apply.
