Our diabetes team is flourishing, thriving, and working together to revolutionise the way we provide care. We endeavour to improve the quality of life for our children and young people living with diabetes. To further develop the team, we are looking to recruit an innovative paediatric diabetes nurse with enthusiasm and passion for helping patients living with diabetes and their families.

Main duties of the job

The Band 7 role requires an experienced, dynamic nurse with diabetic knowledge and understanding. You will need to be flexible and forward-thinking, able to work independently and as part of a small, friendly, and supportive team delivering specialist nursing care to a diverse caseload. There will be a strong focus on delivering an 'out of hospital' agenda across community-based pathways to reduce hospital attendances and length of stay. There is Trust-wide commitment to develop and lead diabetic children's nursing into an exciting and outcomes-driven future, through integration and partnership working, to ensure seamless delivery of services across the health system to meet the needs of children and young people across Buckinghamshire with diabetes.

The post holder will require excellent communication and clinical skills and have previous experience of planning and delivering care for children and young people with diabetes across hospital and community settings. They will need a commitment to education to ensure the service remains current in developments in the care and management of children and young people with diabetes.

Job responsibilities

To provide specialist knowledge, education, and support to children and adolescents with diabetes and their families in order to enable them to achieve independence and self-reliance. To act as a resource providing specialist nursing advice to health and social care professionals and other agencies. To organise and actively take part in the education of qualified and unqualified staff including basic and/or post-basic students. Promotes continuous development in clinical practice in line with NICE guidelines regarding diabetic care for children/adolescents.

Person Specification

Skills, Abilities & Knowledge

Essential

Able to confidently use basic IT systems including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Electronic Patient Records, and other relevant Trust and ICB clinical systems. Ability to communicate clearly with children, families, and MDT team in English. Knowledge of up-to-date nursing and NHS issues. High motivation and ability to motivate others. Knowledge of evidence-informed and research-based practice. Computer literate. Good time management skills. Ability to work independently. Managerial and leadership ability. Ability to resolve conflict/dispute in a non-confrontational manner.

Education, Qualification & Training

Essential

Registered Children's Nurse. Substantial broad experience relevant to area of practice. Advanced theoretical and practical specialist knowledge across a range of paediatric diabetes conditions. Community Nursing Qualification. Management of Childhood and Adolescent Diabetes. Mentorship qualification or Practice Assessor Student Supervisor (PASS) Workshop equivalent. Evidence of further relevant professional development.

Desirable

Experience of using data and information in planning and providing services. Able to collate and clearly present information.

Experience

Essential

2 years experience as band 6 with three years post registration in acute paediatric nursing. Previous experience as a team leader. Experience of teaching students and qualified staff. Community Nursing Experience. Advanced History Taking. Non-Medical Prescribing.
