Part-time carer for a disabled teenager in central Harrogate required, with a special focus on communication and play. This is a great opportunity for an individual hoping to gain experience working with people with speech, language, and communication difficulties. We are looking for a carer to work one afternoon per week (with the possibility of flexible increases in days, depending on individual requirements) with a 17-year-old who has quadriplegic cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair. He is non-verbal but has a great sense of humour and loves walks, train and bus spotting, books, stories, and pretend play. He is easy to get on with, charming, and keen to let people know what he enjoys via simple communication devices and gestures (including an iPad). Duties would include: Meeting the young person from the school bus drop-off at his home Setting up his afternoon gastro feed (training to be provided) Play sessions, books, and communication aid work Walks into town and the local library (his home is a 10-minute walk from the centre) Some clothes changing and general care Candidates do not need any specific prior skills, although some experience in a caring profession or training within them would be a bonus. The successful candidate would be able to demonstrate commitment, patience, initiative, creativity, and empathy.
