The post holder will be responsible for providing a high quality service for those referred with a suspected cancer diagnosis to HDFT, liaising with primary care and the tumour sites that fall within the remit of the RDS at HDFT and with wider colleagues in the trust to assist in delivering the local and national cancer 28 day performance target.

The post-holder will work both directly and indirectly with patients and their carers to assist in coordinating the care of patients through their hospital care journey, providing the patient with the relevant information and coordinating any test preparations that need to be sent or collected by the patient. The post will require the coordination of appropriate services to maximise the delivery of streamlined diagnostic pathways, thereby improving quality of care and experience for patients and their carers and diagnosing cancer earlier.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will support with coordinating the MDT meetings for the non-specific symptoms service, tracking the patient pathways, and providing comprehensive secretarial support to the service ensuring potential breaches of cancer waiting times are avoided or escalated to the RDS Lead.

The post holder will be responsible for the day to day line management of the RDS coordinator.

The purpose of this role is to support the clinical team for patients referred with a suspected cancer including non-specific symptoms to achieve definitive diagnosis by day 28 and provide comprehensive secretarial support to the service.

This role has been specially designed to support the optimal timed pathways and will require the post holder to evolve to support the pathway as it continues to refine over time.

The post holder is expected to be highly experienced within the hospital setting with knowledge and evidence of specialised terminology, educated to a level required to perform the role or equivalent experience.

The post-holder will actively support and contribute to the requirements of the service and ensure compliance with performance targets and quality standards required at a local and national level.

Person Specification Education/Qualifications

5 GCSE's including Maths and English at grade C or equivalent

Knowledge of Microsoft Office packages e.g. Word, PowerPoint, Excel and other IT skills acquired through training and practical experience including internet/web skills

Relevant Health or Social Care experience

NVQ Level 3 or equivalent experience

Medical Secretary Diploma or equivalent

Experience coordinating a patient workload

Basic Communication Skills Training (e.g. Sage/Thyme) / basic counseling

Experience

Experience working with the public / patients in a healthcare environment

Previous administrative and organisational experience

Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, with ability to communicate on a daily basis with people at all levels and in difficult circumstances

Experience of line managing staff and dealing with issues that can arise with staff management

Knowledge and experience of using Trust IT/patient record/information systems, e.g. ICS, ICE, WebV, Winscribe, CRIS

Audio typing experience

Previous experience working within a cancer service
