The majority Labour Group on Tower Hamlets Council is seeking to appoint a Political Adviser. Following the election in May 2010, the Labour Group holds 32 of 51 seats on the Council and forms the main opposition to the independent Elected Mayor. Tower Hamlets is one of the UK’s most culturally vibrant and diverse areas. The borough is densely populated, with over 200,000 people living in eight square miles at the heart of London’s East End. Some 49 per cent of residents are from black and minority ethnic communities. Local people are proud of their history of mutual respect and the borough is regarded as a beacon for community cohesion. We have Investors in People status, have achieved the highest level of the Equality Framework for Local Government and are committed to recruiting a workforce to reflect our community. The Council’s vision is to improve the quality of life for everyone living and working in the borough. Central to our work is a commitment to build One Tower Hamlets, a borough where everyone can access the same opportunities. The Council is recognised by the Audit Commission as ‘performing well in delivering its priorities’ and achieved a CAA score. Challenges do still remain and deprivation and poverty is present in the area, providing a stark contrast to the wealth and prosperity that has grown around Canary Wharf and the City fringes that also lie within the borough. As Political Adviser, your work will directly assist us to address these challenges. You must be committed to the Labour Group’s political aims and have excellent communication skills in dealing with Members and Officers of the Council, the media and the public. You will be expected to co-ordinate and service meetings and undertake research working on your own initiative and often under pressure. The Council has operated a Directly Elected Mayor system since October 2010. This post is advertised under the terms and provisions of the Local Government and Housing Act, 1989 relating to the appointment of assistants to political groups. Closing Date : 1 April 2012 Interview/Start Dates : Proposed Shortlisting date (w/c): 9th April 2012. Proposed Interview date (w/c): 7th May 2012 (due to the elections). Job Contact : For information regarding the post, please contact: Beverley McKenzie, Members’ Support Manager. Contact Number: 020 7364 4872
