Working closely with our military customers and industry partners there are many opportunities for travel, trials and for staff secondments to industry and other MoD organisations. The successful candidate will have the ability to work to project timelines and deliver results to a wide variety of audiences. You will require an existing knowledge of Matlab, a good understanding of applied mathematics, the desire to learn about missile modelling, and the ability to work collaboratively with other subject matter experts in nearby fields. Please note that you must be eligible for DV Clearance. The Role: A guidance, navigation & control (GNC) specialist is required to join a small, multi-disciplined team developing innovative, high-speed air vehicles. This team are conducting research activities into innovative high-speed air vehicles & missiles. This covers all aspects of air vehicle & missile design including aerodynamics, propulsion, seekers, navigation, and guidance navigation & control. Duties: Support the team to further develop an existing 6 degrees-of-freedom model, using it to evaluate the feasibility and performance of air vehicle & missile concepts against given requirements, with the concepts evolving in terms of propulsion, aerodynamic and GNC design. Be involved with concept analysis, autopilot synthesis and guidance loop design across all of the flight phases. This is likely to involve both using and developing in-house tools as well as working alongside technical specialists in partner organisations. Be involved in the assessment of the flying qualities of air vehicles concepts, including stability, agility, manoeuvrability, and precision. Assist with the generation of GNC algorithms, subsystem models and specifications, trajectory and performance data for industry partners to develop a fully functioning technology demonstrator. Requirements – Essential: Experience in GNC disciplines. Understanding and knowledge of guided weapon technologies. Software development or prototyping, preferably Matlab/Simulink Good communications skills (verbal and presentational) Technical report writing experience Work to project timelines and deliver results to a wide variety of audiences. Problem solving and ability to think and work innovatively A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree with strong mathematical content in a relevant scientific, engineering or numerate discipline. Understanding of Earth geodesy/gravitation, atmospherics, and dynamical systems Proficient understanding of the following GNC disciplines: Autopilot design and stability analysis, Guidance laws for varying phases of flight, Navigation systems including integration of GNSS and IMU, and Data fusion and state estimation. Requirements – Desirable: Understanding and knowledge of guided weapon technologies. Experience in defence programmes or projects. Experience with formal software version control. Wider awareness of modelling frameworks, compilation and interfacing. Experience in applying the GNC disciplines in a project-based weapon design cycle. Undertaking literature reviews and analysing open source information for modern theories. PhD in a relevant scientific or engineering field. Proficient in aerodynamics and rocket propulsion. Understanding of modern / robust control theory. Experience in modelling and fusion of star tracker sensors. Ground-based radar and missile seeker technologies.
