We are seeking a User Researcher to join an early-stage startup revolutionising the UK building and construction industry. This is a unique opportunity to shape the direction of a transformative product aimed at addressing trust, quality assurance, and professional standards in the construction sector. Background

The UK building and construction industry faces significant challenges around trust, quality assurance, and professional standards. Homeowners frequently report difficulties finding and working with tradespeople, while skilled professionals struggle to differentiate and market themselves in an increasingly crowded market. These challenges result in stressful experiences, financial disputes, and poor outcomes for all parties involved. We are an early-stage startup committed to understanding and addressing these industry-wide challenges by deeply understanding homeowners' and tradespeople's experiences, needs, and pain points. The Challenge

We need to explore and validate how technology can improve the builder-customer relationship, initially focusing on creating value for tradespeople. Our research should uncover: Current workflows, productivity bottlenecks, and pain points Tools and systems they currently use Business management challenges Marketing and customer acquisition methods Payment and project management practices The Vision

We aim to transform how construction projects are delivered in the UK. Our long-term vision features a two-sided marketplace, with facilities like escrow and project tracking. Our initial focus is creating value for tradespeople through a mobile-first platform that will address and support their underserved needs. Objectives and Key Results

Discovery Objective:

Map the UK Trades Landscape

Complete 25+ structured interviews with diverse tradespeople across regions and specialities Analyse 5+ competing solutions to identify market gaps Document 3 primary user personas with validated needs and behaviours Map current tools and workflows used by target users with a deep dive into JTBD

Definition Objective:

Create an Evidence-Based Product Strategy

Develop a comprehensive service blueprint Create user journey maps highlighting key opportunities Define and validate MVP feature set through early low-to-high fidelity user testing Establish clear success metrics for MVP launch

Design Objective:

Deliver User-Validated MVP Design

Design an intuitive mobile-first interface suitable for users with varying technical proficiency Create a component library and design system Achieve 85% task completion rate in usability testing Deliver development-ready UI specifications

Strategy Objective:

Plan for Growth

Define pricing strategy validated through user research Create a 12-month product roadmap Establish a user acquisition strategy targeting 2000 active users Document recommendations for future feature development

Requirements

Proven experience in product strategy, user research, and UI/UX design Experience with qualitative research methods and usability testing Expertise in Figma and relevant design tools Track record of designing for users with varying technical abilities Experience mentoring stakeholders in UX/UI principles Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills Startup experience preferred Timeframe & Location
