The IFS is recognised as a global centre of excellence for social science research by the UK’s Economic and Social Research Council. We are proud of our reputation for academic rigour, policy impact, high quality communications and absolute independence. It is this reputation – and our commitment to upholding the highest possible standards of quality, rigour and transparency – that ensure that our research, commentary and analysis is so widely used and cited.

Our academic research is at the cutting edge of data analysis, economic modelling and other modern social science methods. We apply this expertise to policy options across a range of issues – from taxes and benefits to education and health, from inequality to corporate taxation. Through flagship initiatives such as the Mirlees Review, the IFS Green Budget and the IFS Deaton Review of Inequalities, we have been guiding politicians and civil servants in implementing effective economic policies for over 50 years.

After 14 successful years as Director, Paul Johnson CBE will stand down in the summer of 2025, and the IFS is seeking an outstanding individual to lead the next phase of the organisation’s development. The Director is the Chief Executive of the IFS, and will play a critical role in shaping its future. This is a high-profile and influential role, uniquely able to shape policy and inform the public on the fiscal matters that affect us all.

The Director will be responsible for disseminating the nationally important research findings of the IFS, responding to fiscal news, and representing the IFS across a variety of media platforms and public events. The Director will oversee a complex network of stakeholder relationships across policymakers, the media, academics, funders and corporate partners, and be responsible for leading a high-performing team of colleagues and fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment.

We are seeking an exceptional leader of the highest intellectual standing, with a profound understanding of economic issues and their application to public policy debates in the UK and internationally. A natural communicator and collaborator, the Director will be able to communicate complex economic concepts to broad, diverse audiences across a variety of media, with the integrity and reputation to represent the organisation externally and be a nationally trusted voice on economic and fiscal opinions across the political spectrum.

The closing date for applications is

9am (GMT) on 10th of February 2025 .

Salary: Competitive.

Location: London, with regular travel.
