The post is at the Department of Computer Science of the University of York and is associated with the Integrated Quantum Networks (IQN) Research Hub. This newly funded hub is at the forefront of advances toward the so-called “quantum internet”, where quantum resources will be used at adistance to enable the game-changing power of quantum computing and quantum metrology for critical applications, whilst being verifiably secure. The IQN Hub focuses on the distribution of quantum entanglement at all length scales for quantum communications, distributed quantum computing, and quantum sensing. Quantum networks transmit and share quantum information, exploiting entanglement and quantum measurement to achieve tasks beyond the reach of classical systems. The IQN Hub will address major challenges currently preventing thefull establishment of the quantum internet - a worldwide series of networks interconnecting remote quantum devices through quantum links working alongside classical systems – and, in so doing, create fundamentally new communications and computing capabilities. This role is available for up to 24 months with potential to extend for a further 12 months. Role This post is specifically for designing theoretical protocols able to: Efficiently generate and distil entanglement between two parties Efficiently route entanglement in a network with arbitrary topology The approach is not limited to entanglement distribution, but will also consider the end-to-end network transmission of quantum information via quantum error-correcting codes (QECCs). The ideal candidate will have excellent skills and expertise in quantum networking and quantum communications with a range of tools and theoretical methods. The role holder is required to undertake the duties below: To conduct research in quantum networking for the IQN hub and to contribute to the production of research papers To assist in the identification and development of potential areas of research and the development of proposals for independent or collaborative research projects To assist in the interaction with research and industrial partners in the IQN hub. To conduct individual and collaborative research projects, duties to include: analysis and interpretation of research data; use of appropriate research techniques and methods; writing up of research results and dissemination through publications, seminar and conference presentations, and public engagement and outreach activities; contributing to the identification of possible new areas of research To contribute to the preparation of research proposals and applications to external bodies To undertake appropriate organisational and administrative activities connected to the research project, including conference organisation, and the development of promotional or educational material including website maintenance and development To develop and initiate collaborative working internally and externally, duties to include: the building of internal contacts and participation in internal networks; collaboration with colleagues on joint projects as required; participation in and identification of external networks to share information and identify potential opportunities for collaboration and possible sources of funding; attendance at and contribution to relevant meetings To guide other staff and students, as required, and coordinate small research teams' work.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications needed Undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Electronic or Electrical Engineering (or similar) Doctoral-level research experience in quantum information PhD or equivalent qualification Knowledge of techniques and tools in the area of quantum networking Knowledge of continuous variable quantum information Knowledge of network routing methods Experience of writing up research work for publication Highly developed communication skills to engage effectively with a wide-ranging audience Interview date:
