British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is looking for an exceptional

Radio Operator to join our Tower Operations team.

BAS delivers and enables world-leading interdisciplinary research in the Polar Regions. We employ experts from many different professions to carry out our Science as well as keep the lights on, feed the research and support teams, and keep everyone safe!

You’ll help us to deliver

an Air/Ground Communications Service and Flight Following service for BAS aircraft operations on the continent as well as providing a coordinating function between aviation, field, station, and construction operations.

Within the role, there will be an opportunity to develop

experience in a novel aviation environment.

Current projects the team are working on include

transitioning to the new Discovery building where the 2025/26 season will see the first full season operation from the new Operations Tower.

Some of your main responsibilities will include:

Aircraft Flight Following

Operating VHF and HF radios and satellite communications systems

Passing and receiving operational messages to/from aircraft and field parties

Filing and operating flight plans and flight plan associated messages via the Assisted Flight Plan Exchange (AFPEx)

Coordinating and liaising with construction operations

Monitoring marine boating operations

General support to station operations

Providing the initial response to major accidents and incidents

Dealing with and responding to aircraft and other emergency situations

Ensuring all concerned staff are kept up to date with relevant operational information

Keeping the meteorology and forecasting teams aware of adverse changes in weather conditions both at Rothera and in the field

Ensuring field party requests are actioned and kept up to date

For the role of Radio Operator, we are looking for somebody who has:

General use of Office packages

Ability to learn specialist software

Experience of aviation operations

Operational use of VHF/HF radios or satellite communications systems
