The National Theatre of Scotland is a groundbreaking theatre company that has been redefining the boundaries of performance since 2006. Known for its “theatre without walls” ethos, it creates powerful and diverse productions in unconventional spaces across Scotland and beyond — from village halls to urban landscapes and international stages. With a commitment to inclusivity, collaboration, and community engagement, the company champions stories that reflect the richness of contemporary Scotland. Based at their creative hub, Rockvilla, they support artists, nurture new talent, and strive to make theatre accessible to everyone. As a proud Disability Confident Employer and holder of the LGBT+ Charter Mark, the National Theatre of Scotland embraces diversity, aiming to make a lasting impact on both the arts and the communities it serves. The Role

We are seeking an exceptional Director of Finance and Administration to join the National Theatre of Scotland’s senior leadership team. Reporting to the Executive Director, this pivotal role will lead the finance, HR, and operations functions, providing strategic oversight and expert advice to the Executive Leadership and Board. You will be joining an energetic, collaborative and motivated team, who share a passion for the arts. The Director will ensure the company’s financial stability through proactive planning, accurate reporting, and robust compliance with regulatory obligations. Additionally, you will drive the development and delivery of HR services, ICT systems, and building operations, fostering efficiencies and effectiveness across the organisation. The Person

This role is suited for a dynamic leader who is a qualified accountant with at least 5 years’ experience in financial control within a similarly sized organisation (62 staff, £6m turnover). The ideal candidate will have expertise in charitable structures, including SORP reporting to HMRC and OSCR, and experience working with publicly funded bodies and reporting to a non-executive Board. Strong knowledge of HR policies and people management (5+ years), along with 3+ years overseeing IT, operations, and providing strategic advice, is essential. Desirable skills include familiarity with systems like Iplicit and BrightHR, HR leadership experience, and a background or passion for theatre or the arts. The successful candidate will be a collaborative, adaptable leader with excellent communication skills, a hands-on approach, and a commitment to the company’s values of being Inventive, Collaborative, and Ambitious. This is a unique opportunity for a strategic leader with a passion for the arts and a commitment to organisational excellence. If you are motivated to play a key role in supporting the National Theatre of Scotland’s innovative, inclusive, and groundbreaking work, we want to hear from you.
