Advanced Specialist Orthoptist, Lead Clinical Tutor

at Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to cover maternity leave for a fixed term post of 12 months.

This is an excellent opportunity to gain a broad range of experience. The Trust’s main two sites are Ashford Hospital and St. Peter’s Hospital, and we also provide services at Woking Community Hospital. Day case surgery takes place in dedicated theatres at Ashford Hospital with Paediatric and other selected surgeries at St Peter’s Hospital. We are a forward-looking department with a team of 19 medical staff including 1 with an interest in Paediatric Ophthalmology and Ocular Motility and 1 Paediatric Optometrist.

Responsibilities: To provide high quality Orthoptic care as an autonomous advanced practitioner. To assess, diagnose and manage all categories of patients referred to the Orthoptic service provided by Ashford and St. Peter’s Hospitals (ASPH) NHS Foundation Trust. To be the Orthoptic department’s education service lead for the education of pre-registration Optometrists, medical students, trainee GPs, Nurses and AHPs. They will also mentor newly appointed junior Orthoptic staff including preceptorship of Orthoptists within the department. To share the Orthoptic Team Leader Role with other band 7.

Ashford and St. Peters Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust serves a population of more than 410,000 people living in North-West Surrey, parts of Hounslow and beyond. Over 3,700 highly trained doctors, nurses, midwives, therapists, healthcare scientists and other support staff make up our workforce, providing a wide range of services across our two hospital sites, Ashford, Surrey and St Peter's, Chertsey, Surrey.

We also run many specialist clinics in the community and local community hospitals and other healthcare facilities.

Our vision is to be one of the best healthcare Trusts in the country. There has never been a better time to join us in the NHS at ASPH. We are committed to providing continuous professional development, staff benefits and flexibility to shape our workforce around our patient care.

This is an exciting time to join our Trust, as we work on the expansion of our theatres at Ashford Hospital and move towards this becoming our dedicated elective centre. We want to create a state-of-the-art centre for excellence for planned surgical procedures; with care delivered by dedicated, specialist teams in a modern and well-equipped environment.

We hope to use this centre to create an environment of learning and to facilitate training of the next generation of our skilled NHS workforce. Our plans are ambitious - why not, come and be a part of our journey.

The department is an accredited clinical undergraduate Orthoptic training centre; the post holder will develop and lead the Orthoptic undergraduate placements within the department. The post holder will be their mentor and clinical supervisor. The post holder will be required to undertake a significant amount of clinical teaching, create student timetables, conduct student induction, deliver formative and summative student feedback as required (see attached job description for more details.)
