Purpose of the job:
The role of the FSO is to assist in tackling underachievement by working in partnership with families, parents, carers, and students in a school context to enable students, particularly the most disadvantaged, to have full access to educational opportunities and overcome barriers to learning and participation. The FSO will work directly with parents in a non-judgemental way empowering them and their families to get the most out of the educational opportunities available. FSO will focus their work on preventative and early intervention activities. They will work with students in the school where presenting needs are below the thresholds that trigger the involvement of specialist services and other agencies. The FSO will work as one of the key members of the safeguarding team, and the single point of contact for all Looked After Children and external agencies linked to them. The FSO will liaise and work effectively with all students with allocated social workers and other external agencies. The successful candidate must be ready to complete a counselling/therapy training that will be paid for by the school to enhance the impact of their work they will be doing with families and students.
Specific Responsibilities:
Parent Support Advisor:
Work with students and their parents where external factors are a barrier to learning.
Support Heads of Year to identify these students to help to improve attendance and achievement.
Liaise with external agencies, such as Social Services, to improve achievement for key students.
Attend regular meetings, internally and with external stakeholders, for students and their parents as needed to raise achievement, reduce exclusion, and improve attendance.
Signpost services to parents/carers and students.
Attendance Manager:
Work with the Attendance Clerk and other stakeholders to identify any students at risk of Persistent Absenteeism and carry out early intervention work, making relevant referrals to the Education Welfare Officer for fast-track prosecution in appropriate cases.
Conduct daily home visits using the data for absenteeism or vulnerable students with safeguarding concerns.
Assist the school in dealing with attendance/inclusion issues through visits to schools and students’ homes, making referrals to appropriate agencies as needed.
Identify, with parents, reasons for their child’s non-attendance, and work with them and others to achieve regular attendance to promote inclusion.
Implement plans/actions to resolve poor attendance, working closely with school staff, the student, and their family.
Liaise with Heads of Year and key pastoral team members to support students in improving their attendance.
