Position Overview Role Title: Specialist Technician Jewellery Department: Higher Education Salary: £29,000 Hours of Work: 37.5 hours per week; Monday to Friday Contract Type: Full Time Permanent Reporting to: Course Manager HNC Art & Design 3D (Jewellery) Location: Camden, London Purpose of job We are seeking a skilled practitioner in Jewellery Design & Manufacturing with the technical expertise to support high-quality student work. The day-to-day purpose of the role is to assist workshop users by providing technical advice, instruction, and demonstrations across a wide range of techniques, materials, and processes. You will also ensure the safe operation of the workshop, maintain equipment, organise material inventory, and promote good housekeeping practices. You will collaborate with the British Academy of Jewellery Higher Education Team, engaging with academic staff and students to ensure the smooth running of workshops. Key Responsibilities Ensure a safe working environment and monitor housekeeping across all workshop spaces. Maintain machinery, equipment, and systems, ensuring they are operational and fit for purpose. Plan and order materials necessary. Manage material stocks, prepare resources for teaching sessions, and liaise with academic staff. Provide technical expertise and contribute to academic activities within the Jewellery workshops. Support student learning through training, instruction, and the development of specialist techniques and technologies. Maintain communication between staff, students, and suppliers to support workshop operations. Duties and Responsibilities Workshop Management Oversee the daily operation of Jewellery workshops, including during and outside timetabled sessions. Ensure compliance with Health and Safety regulations, including the maintenance and repair of equipment. Manage inventories, risk assessments, and records related to equipment, stock, and consumables. Technical Expertise Share knowledge of Jewellery Design and Manufacturing, including bench-work, casting, shaping, forming, 3D technologies (e.g., laser cutting/3D printing), enamelling, etching, machining, and material processes. Provide guidance, instruction, and feedback to students, supporting their learning outcomes and skill development. Assist with diagnosing and solving creative challenges and technical issues. Collaboration and Support Work with the academic team to plan and develop programmes, including curriculum development and research projects. Collaborate with other technical staff to ensure consistent service delivery and operational efficiency. Support Tutors during learning activities, supplying appropriate materials, resources, and equipment. Academic Contribution Contribute to the planning and delivery of learning activities, including formal and informal student sessions (e.g., demonstrations, coaching, and instruction). Provide constructive feedback to students, helping them meet course learning outcomes. Assist with the development of teaching materials and resources related to your area of expertise. Maintenance and Procurement Oversee the maintenance and servicing of equipment, liaising with suppliers and contractors. Assist with the commissioning, delivery, and installation of new equipment. Manage material and equipment orders to support academic activities and workshops. Events and Exhibitions Support the planning and delivery of exhibitions and events, contributing to their successful execution. Professional Development Liaise with external professionals, attend conferences and exhibitions to develop knowledge and skills, and apply this expertise to support academic learning and research. Person Specification We are seeking an enthusiastic, committed, and reliable individual who has the following essential credentials: A relevant degree, equivalent qualification, substantial experience, or transferable professional knowledge relating to the discipline of Jewellery Design. Hands-on experience of working with materials and processes pertinent to jewellery design. Competencies in the following workshop disciplines: bench-work, casting, shaping, and forming, 3D technologies (laser cutting/3D printing), enamelling, etching, and machining. A working knowledge of H&S as appropriate to a HE environment. Capable of disseminating technical knowledge and general information to a broad range of home and international students from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. Experience of working as part of a close-knit team and an understanding of the importance of working with other external teams or individuals to achieve both long- and short-term objectives. Experience of working in an educational environment at FE/HE and/or Post Graduate level. A commitment to both personal and professional development. An awareness and appreciation of the need for high levels of customer care and a flexible attitude to supporting the development of new ideas, technologies, and processes.
