BBC News in Yorkshire is looking for a senior journalist to work in its multiplatform newsroom in Leeds. Yorkshire is one of the largest and most diverse news patches in England. We serve audiences in North, South and West Yorkshire – so big cities such as Leeds, Sheffield, Bradford and York as well as coastal towns, rural villages and everything in between. This is primarily a content production role although there may be opportunities for reporting. We need someone who is comfortable working across all platforms, including Online. You will be based in Leeds but may be asked on occasions to work in the field from Chesterfield to Scarborough or at our other bases in Sheffield and York. You will spend time working in an office and working remotely according to business need. Please note, you will be expected to work at weekends as well as on early or late shifts as part of the role advertised. Main Responsibilities
As Senior Journalist, you will help inspire, guide and challenge our team of Journalists who produce content for local, regional, national and international audiences. You will have substantial experience in text-based or broadcast journalism, and ideally some experience as a sub-editor and/or news editor. You will play a key role in supporting the Senior News Editor in delivering a multi-platform newsroom. Delivering our main roles: news editing (deciding the stories we cover and how we do so, as well as allocating them between reporters); planning for the following day and beyond; and working effectively with colleagues in online, radio, television and social media. You may also be required to carry out subbing (ensuring our stories are accurate, fair, balanced, concise and well-written). Are you the right candidate?
Our ideal candidate will be a creative, experienced, highly-motivated journalist who is confident in daily news and curious about the world around them. You might have already gained experience as a news editor and sub-editor and thrive under considerable pressure. You will have the people skills to be able to support and challenge reporters of varying levels of experience and skill and help to get the best out of them. You’ll be able to demonstrate your knowledge of social media both as a newsgathering tool and to effectively promote our content. Your news judgement is excellent and you have a solid current knowledge of media law and the BBC’s Editorial guidelines. You want to break stories and have a track record of original, agenda-setting journalism.
