The Lymphoedema Therapist will work as part of the wider therapy outpatients team, using specialist skills to diagnose and formulate treatment plans for patients with Primary and Secondary lymphoedema and enable patients to self manage their chronic condition. You will have your own caseload of patients to support and follow up ensuring continuity of care. Management will include compression garments, skincare and prevention of infection, exercise and weight management advice and self-lymphatic drainage. You will also work with the team to provide intensive lymphoedema treatment, including lymphoedema bandaging, manual lymphatic drainage, photobiomodulation and kinesiology taping. The lymphoedema therapist will work as an autonomous practitioner in an outpatient setting, utilising specialist knowledge and skills to provide assessment, treatment and management for children and adults with Lymphoedema and Lipoedema. The Lymphoedema Therapist will determine clinical diagnosis of both Primary and Secondary Lymphoedema and Lipoedema and communicate this information to the patient and their wider healthcare team. They will plan lymphoedema treatment and management in conjunction with the patient and in accordance to local guidelines and implement this treatment plan together with other team members. They will be responsible for supervising junior staff and delegating work to other staff members. The lymphoedema service is a progressive service and there will be an opportunity to lead service development in line with current research evidence. Person Specification
Qualifications
Degree in Occupational Therapy/ Physiotherapy/ Podiatry /Nursing or equivalent HCPC or NMC registered Evidence of post-registration training and development Post-graduate Lymphoedema Training Manual Lymphatic Drainage Qualification Experience
Minimum of 18 months post qualification experience. Experience of working within a multidisciplinary team, a good understanding of their roles and respect for the other professionals within the team. Experience of managing teams Experience of Service development Experience of working independently in a patient centred environment Experience working in any of the following: Lymphoedema, Outpatients, Primary care, Palliative care, Tissue Viability, Dermatology Specialist Knowledge
Evidence of post-graduate education and development. Knowledge and understanding of the principles of Rehabilitation and the promotion of patient self-management Understanding of chronic illness management including self-care Well-developed communication skills - empathy, negotiation, and motivation, presenting of complex facts in an understandable way, re-assurance, and support particularly to anxious people. Experience of teaching (formal or informal). Knowledge of Lymphoedema and its management. Personal Qualities
Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Able to work flexibly and in highly stressful situations including the ability to manage distressing and emotive situations successfully (e.g. working with people recently diagnosed with life changing conditions).
