About the role (External) You will provide technical expertise in Environment & Sustainable Development across Route Services, giving specialist advice to the Functions to support and enable the business to meet its compliance obligations, identify and manage risks, maximise opportunities and build capability in the line to deliver sustainable outcomes aligned to corporate sustainability policies & strategies. Key Accountabilities Support the implementation of sustainability policies & strategies, business objectives and performance measures to enable the function to meet its responsibilities for management of key environmental & social impacts. Provide timely and coherent environmental guidance and technical support across Route Services to enable effective risk management. Co-ordinate environmental management processes by provision of advice and support to all stakeholders to maintain compliance across Route Services. Carry out assurance activities across Route Services to evaluate the effectiveness of the Environmental Management System (EMS), assess compliance with legal and other requirements, and drive continuous improvement. Co-ordinate the integration of Route Services Environmental Management System (EMS) and promote sustainability at all levels of the organisation. Review and comment on emerging government policies and legislation in respect of potential impacts on the activities of Route Services. Follow up incidents and provide help and advice to interested parties to support the investigation and facilitate the implementation of corrective actions. Assist in the formulation and delivery of environmental training packages to promote environmental awareness and compliance to applicable legislation within the function. Job Skills, Experience and Qualifications Essential Educated to degree level (minimum UK level 6) in environment / sustainability (or equivalent through experience) Associate member of IEMA or equivalent professional institute e.g. CIEEM or CIWM (working towards Practitioner membership) Demonstrable experience in managing sustainability risks & opportunities in large and complex organisations Experience of implementing and/or maintaining an environmental management system (e.g. ISO or equivalent) Proven good management, interpersonal, influencing, communication, organisational and report writing skills Demonstrable good understanding of UK legislative framework and requirements Desirable CEEQUAL/BREEAM Assessor qualification NEBOSH general certificate Auditor qualification (e.g., ISO 14001 Lead Auditor) Experience in Environmental Permitting (preferably in the Waste Sector), Sustainable Infrastructure Design and/or Sustainable Procurement.
