Our people make Severn Trent a truly exciting and inclusive place to work – a place where you can be yourself and let your skills shine. Our purpose is taking care of life’s essentials, but we’re also big on making a difference, not just because we should but because we care. Therefore, we are excited to announce a new opportunity to join our Water Treatment Asset Strategy Team as a

Strategic Asset Manager (Water Treatment), based in our Coventry office. This team develops the medium to long term strategy for water treatment, develops our five-year business plans and strategy submissions to Ofwat and the Drinking Water Inspectorate whilst working with our tactical, operational and delivery teams, and makes investment decisions to balance risk and performance to future proof against challenges such as climate change and pollution. The role of the Strategic Asset Manager is varied and will depend on where we are in the regulatory AMP cycle. A typical week could see you developing business cases aimed at dealing with future drinking water quality and treatment challenges, researching and reviewing future legislation, looking at climate change impacts on raw water quality/treatability or acting as a project sponsor for teams delivering complex, strategic programmes of work. Collaboration and collective decision making is key for this role, working with our teams of amazingly experienced technical experts as well as professionals, practitioners, academics and regulators outside our organisation – a chance to build your network! EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW Comprising of four Strategic Asset Managers and Analysts reporting to our Asset Strategy Lead for Water Treatment, the team is relatively small but has a huge influence on the direction of our organisation. Key accountabilities will be: Translating the outputs from Ofwat’s final determination of our business plan (PR24) into practical plans. Making clear and sometimes difficult prioritisation decisions to ensure that our investment plans balance capital and operational spend. Undertaking medium- and long-term planning, taking into consideration future needs, opportunities and legislation e.g. related to climate change and pollution. This will include the development and writing of our next business plan submissions to Ofwat (PR29), following in the footsteps of our successful ones for PR24. Ensuring that you have current knowledge of drinking water quality and treatment processes and working practices, developing links with other water companies and organisations where appropriate. Considering the life cycle of a variety of water treatment assets and supporting with developing asset class strategies for them. Working with colleagues and the DWI to develop our drinking water quality enhancement programme. Working alongside our tactical asset planning team to provide sponsorship for strategic projects. Supporting the development of, and adherence to, our corporate Asset Management Framework. Working with other teams, both internally and externally to ensure plans are communicated and that competing priorities are understood and managed. Potential periodic line management/mentoring/coaching of graduates and apprentices who have placements within the team. WHAT YOU’LL BRING TO THE ROLE The ideal candidate will have a degree or post-graduate qualification within a scientific, environmental, technical or engineering discipline, or the equivalent experience. You will be forward looking and proactive, with the ability to work alone using your own initiative and motivation. You will possess excellent communication (written and verbal), influencing skills and be able to convey detailed information in simple language for a variety of audiences. You will be able to make complex decisions through analysis of technical and financial data to ensure the best outcomes for our customers and stakeholders. As well as being able to analyse data and recommend plans and strategies, you will need to be great at writing these down in high quality business cases and articulating them verbally to a variety of stakeholders. Knowledge and experience of one or more of the following are preferable, however candidates with similar experience in an equivalent industry will be considered: Drinking Water Quality analysis and regulation. Delivery/design of water industry capital investment. Water industry asset management/strategy. Hydrology/Hydrogeology – source to tap.
