We have a rare and exciting opportunity for a dynamic and forward-thinking Physiotherapist to join the Coventry Sleep and Ventilation Service. We welcome applicants with direct experience of long-term NIV and respiratory clinical skills.

There will be opportunities for service development, research, and clinical audit.

The Department of Respiratory and Sleep Sciences is a UKAS accredited Physiology Department offering a comprehensive respiratory and sleep diagnostic and therapeutic service.

Main duties of the job

The post involves leading a multidisciplinary team (MDT) which includes Clinical Scientists, Clinical Physiologists, Nurses, and Physiotherapists.

You will be required to assess, initiate, and monitor patients on long-term NIV across a range of conditions including neuromuscular disease, COPD, obesity, spinal cord injury, and chest wall deformity.

There is an opportunity to become an integral part of the long-term NIV MDT who manage a large and varied caseload of approximately 400 patients including those with complex neuromuscular disease and airway clearance needs. You will have the opportunity to engage in partnership working across organisational boundaries including consultants, nurses, physiotherapists, clinical scientists, support workers, and other specialist services such as the home oxygen service, neurological services, and local hospices.

Job responsibilities

Formulate and deliver individual treatment programmes based on advanced clinical knowledge that includes the utilisation of long-term NIV (including tracheostomy), cough augmentation techniques as well as other suitable physiotherapeutic interventions including suction. To be professionally accountable for all aspects of own work, including the management of patients in your care. To ensure the high standard of clinical practice for patients under our care and support junior staff to do likewise. Work autonomously within local and national policies and codes of conduct. Independently plan and prioritise own workload, liaising with relevant MDT members within the trust and wider healthcare community. To carry out highly developed dexterity, co-ordination and palpation skills for assessment and manual treatment of patients, e.g., auscultation. To be able to cope with the emotional stress of managing patients who are dying and their distressed relatives. This may include the decision to withdraw active treatment. To be able to manage clinical situations where visually distressing sights such as open wounds and injury occur and to ensure the support of other team members in this situation. Perform physiological testing to include arterial blood gas (ABG) analysis, spirometry, muscle function testing, overnight oximetry, and transcutaneous monitoring.
