The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals Podiatry department is inviting applicants for a permanent Band 6 Specialist Podiatrist. Full or part time hours will be considered. Either 3, 4, or 5 days to work across community sites in Newcastle, including home visits and care homes.

This exciting opportunity will appeal to someone who would like to consolidate their skills in delivering a wide range of community podiatry services including nail surgery and will include rotations into Musculoskeletal, Diabetes, and In-patient podiatry.

The successful applicant will have the skills and ability to work within specialist teams and demonstrate previous NHS experience in managing patients with complex clinical pathologies.

The candidate will be able to demonstrate the principles of managing foot ulceration, following departmental Standard Operating Procedures, Clinical pathways and Trust clinical guidelines. Applicants must show a willingness to complete and document B6 competencies in each of the specialist areas.

Main duties of the job

As a Band 6 podiatrist you will be expected to participate in relevant clinical audit and quality improvement to support progression within the service based around the pillars of practice.

The knowledge and experience gained from working within a truly integrated department and with the wider NUTH team will give you the skills and attributes to further develop your clinical, communication and organization skills, and a conscientious approach to delivering the highest quality patient care.

Job responsibilities

The successful applicant will adopt a flexible approach to meet the evolving needs of the service, and be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of best practice podiatry care. This will include:

Working as part of a skill mixed locality team, you will be expected to triage referrals into the service, assess patients in line with Newcastle podiatry risk assessment tool, and discharge patients from the service when appropriate. The role requires you to carry out Podiatry interventions at clinical locations, care homes and patients' own homes, with some rotations on hospital sites. Team-working is essential to this role, as you will be expected to work with junior or support staff, and when doing rotations or more specialist work you may also be working with more senior colleagues. Liaising with various MDT colleagues when managing more complex patients and sharing decision making. Excellent communication skills are required to complete accurate clinical records, and to liaise with the wider MDT. Promoting foot health through support, advice and education to patients, family members and other health care professionals.

To work as part of a highly motivated team, with at least two years NHS post-registration experience and having completed a Specialist Podiatrist competency based programme.

The job entails autonomous working without supervision across community and acute settings providing a high standard of quality clinical care.

To assess, diagnose, develop and implement individualised care programmes for a variety of patient groups with specialised care needs, including patients with chronic diseases, problems of the vascular and nervous system, tissue viability problems and patients requiring wound management.

The post holder is expected to develop professionally in order to assess and treat patients with specialised care needs e.g. diabetes, rheumatology, biomechanics and wound care, and only refer on highly complex cases.

Please note it is a requirement of The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust that all successful candidates who require a DBS for the post they have been offered pay for their DBS certificate. The method of payment is a salary deduction from your first month's pay.

Person Specification

KNOWLEDGE

Essential Appreciation of individual patient needs and patient groups. Specialized knowledge of Diabetes, Rheumatology, Biomechanics, and Wound Management gained through short courses, CPD and in-house training. Knowledge of Health and Safety responsibilities. Knowledge of Clinical Governance issues.

Desirable An understanding of student placements.

SKILLS

Essential High quality clinical skills including delicate scalpel work and sharp debridement. Good communication skills good verbal and written communication skills. Good organizational skills planning own caseload. Analytical skills. Critical / reflective analysis. Ability to prioritize. Production of chair side Orthotics. Demonstrate the ability to use vascular and sensory equipment. Be able to supervise and mentor. Appropriate delegation of non-specialised clinical work. Be able to work independently but also as part of a team. Must be able to produce documents, implement and evaluate care plans.

Desirable Basic IT skills to aid with audit and data collection. Interest in Health Education. Ability to develop teaching packages.

EXPERIENCE

Essential Experience of working in the NHS and completion of a Band 5 competency programme. Experience working single handed and as a member of a multi-disciplinary team. Experience of treatment planning and discharge planning according to clinical need. Experience in specialist areas of work, i.e. minor nail surgery, biomechanics, rheumatology and managing the 'at risk or 'high risk' foot. Woundcare Management. Must be able to work under pressure and respond to change. Involvement in Health Education presentations. Experience of treating at risk patients and empowering patients to self-care.

Desirable Range of relevant short courses. Held a previous post in the relevant field. Interest in developing the service. Experience of Topical Negative Pressure. Experience of multi-disciplinary team work.

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential Podiatry Diploma / Degree. State Registration to Health Professions Council. POM A registration. Continuing Professional Development Portfolio of post graduate in Diabetes, Rheumatology, Wound Management, Tissue Viability, Vascular Assessment, Neurological Assessment, Local Anaesthesia, Infection Control, Pharmacology, Basic Life Support, Dermatology, Clinical Education and in-house mandatory and statutory training. Must hold a current driving licence and have access to a suitable vehicle for business purposes.

Desirable Prescribing for Podiatrists. Diploma in Diabetes Care. Health Education Certificate. Teachers Certificate. Preparation for Mentoring Course. Radiology and Diagnostic Skills. Shoe Fitting Skills.
