The Opportunity This newly created role in our Carbon Solutions Team bridges the gap between work-winning and project delivery, providing dedicated support during the pre-construction phase. Upon project award, you'll dive deep into the whole life carbon requirements, collaborating with project leaders and clients to finalise the most effective carbon management, measurement and reduction plans for our projects. Reporting to the Whole Life Carbon Lead, you'll work closely with Pre-Construction Directors, Project Leads, Clients, Carbon Consultants, and our Sustainability leadership and gain unparalleled experience on a diverse portfolio of multi-sector, large-scale, prestigious projects. This is a national role, involving travel to regional and project offices across the UK, with flexibility to work from one of our offices in Sale, Dartford, Worksop, St Neots, or Oldbury, as well as remotely. Proximity to the Sale office, where many of our project teams and the Work-Winning Whole Life Carbon Manager are based would be advantageous. As Carbon Specialist, you will: Collaborate with the Work Winning Whole Life Carbon Manager on awarded bids to understand the project requirements and commitments made. Support pre-construction teams from preferred bidder stage through the Pre-Construction Services Agreement (PCSA) period, including Laing O'Rourke as well as our specialist trading businesses. Identify client, framework, planning/DCO, Section 106, LOR and any other associated requirements for whole life carbon measurement, management and reduction; weather resilience and climate change adaptation; and circular economy strategy. Work with the project leadership team to develop project carbon management plans and ensure clear roles and responsibilities are established for all carbon requirements. Develop scope requirements for any carbon consultants required by the project, review proposals and manage their appointment to ensure deliverables are met. Identify carbon hotspots and engage design and procurement teams and supply chain partners to seek opportunities for carbon reduction and incorporate requirements into specifications and subcontracts. Work with the commercial and technical teams to negotiate carbon targets and key performance indicators with the client. Provide advice on whole life carbon measurement, management, reduction and reporting and establish and embed systems and processes necessary to achieve project requirements and targets. Review and support the environmental and technical teams to manage any sustainability assessments (BREEAM, LEED, WELL etc). Establish a working relationship with the client and consultant teams and determine reporting requirements and methodology for provision of data. Contribute to the development and delivery of carbon literacy training for all levels of staff and support the upskilling of project teams. Work with the Whole Life Carbon leader and recruitment team to appropriately resource the project and handover for the delivery phase. About You We're looking for a passionate, forward-thinking professional eager to change the construction industry for the better. To excel in this role, you'll bring: A deep commitment to sustainability, carbon reduction, and climate resilience. Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence and inspire others. 5+ years' experience within design or construction teams, ideally across diverse projects, sectors, contractual arrangements and technical disciplines. Experience in applying carbon measurement, management principles, standards and techniques and a commitment to growing the body of knowledge within the construction industry. Ability to summarise and communicate carbon-related data and effectively highlight risks and opportunities. Strong project coordination skills, with a talent for managing deadlines and priorities across a diverse project portfolio. A degree in Engineering, Architecture, Environmental Science, or a related field (Master's preferred), and professional membership (e.g., Chartered Engineer, Chartered Environmentalist).
