We have a vacancy for a part-time Senior Sister/Charge Nurse to join our senior nursing team. This is an exciting opportunity for a committed leader with exemplary communication and interpersonal skills, who is an excellent role model and passionate about quality, safety, and innovation.

The post holder will be responsible for providing strong visible leadership, coordinating unit activity, and supervising staff within the Critical Care unit. You will act as an effective role model, supporting the unit leadership to ensure that a high standard of care is delivered to patients and relatives and that carers are supported. You will be responsible for the daily flow of acute admissions, discharges, and transfers, working closely with the site management team, theatre staff, and medical staff. The role is high profile and requires you to lead and manage a team of nurses with varied skills and experience. The post holder will be expected to support the Unit Manager, Clinical Lead, and Divisional Management in ensuring both local and national quality targets and key performance indicators are met.

Critical Care at Hillingdon supports a team-based rostering approach to working days or a flexible working pattern if this is preferred (subject to service needs).

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing high standards of patient care, providing supervision and leadership to a team with a diverse range of experience and skills. You will be expected to be a role model for the team and committed to improving patient outcomes. You will be a strong and effective leader, ensuring a smooth patient journey through Critical Care and into the wider Trust, planning and delivering appropriate care for admissions and discharges, quickly identifying clinical problems and taking appropriate actions, as well as deputising for the Unit Manager and other colleagues in their absence.

The applicant will be expected to work alongside other Senior Sister/Charge Nurses in the Critical Care team, providing cover for a 24-hour service while working within national and local policies and standards.

1. Clinical and Professional

The post holder will:

Work in accordance with NMC Code: Professional standards of behaviour for nurses, midwives, and nursing associates prioritising people, practising effectively, preserving safety, and promoting professionalism and trust. In addition, the post holder will work with local and trust policies and guidance. Actively identify and manage potential infection control issues ensuring all necessary precautions are in place for patients and staff. Promote and facilitate a patient-centred approach to care. Promote and facilitate 'best practice' in all aspects of care delivered to patients, their relatives, and carers. Lead and coordinate clinical expertise within Critical Care, providing clinical support, advice, and supervision to junior members of the critical care team, and work cohesively in collaboration with all other members of the multi-disciplinary team (MDT) to provide and promote seamless service delivery and effective and appropriate discharge and/or follow-up as appropriate. Establish effective working relationships with other hospital departments and external agencies to facilitate safe and appropriate patient care using efficient and effective communication strategies. Ensure that nursing documentation related to patient care is in accordance with the NMC Standards for records and record keeping requirements, and the legal and ethical framework e.g. data protection, confidentiality. Ensure the safe and effective use of all medical devices used within the Critical Care Unit.
