Supporting the ward manager to ensure the effective management of a ward with day-to-day responsibility of managing the shift and bed management.

Delivery of a high standard of patient care on a daily basis and providing clinical and managerial leadership and teaching to nursing and support staff.

Assessment of care needs and the development, implementation, and evaluation of programmes of care for patients who suffer from severe mental illness.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and provide leadership and be a role model to the team. They will provide quality evidence-based nursing advice, support, and care for patients with mental health needs and their carers within a multidisciplinary setting.

They will support the ward manager to have overall continuing responsibility for the management and leadership of the ward including administration and the overall co-ordination, assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of programmes of care and the setting and auditing of standards of care.

Job description

Job responsibilities

1. Ensure appropriate staff resources are planned and deployed to meet safe staffing requirements through rota management using Health Roster. Adjust rotas as necessary to address, for example, episodes of staff absence and requirements for increased observations.

2. Undertake assessments of individuals with complex mental health presentations, including those patients presenting with higher levels of risk.

3. Develop in collaboration with the patient their care plan and their recovery plan.

4. Offer specialist nursing assessment and advice where required.

5. Take the lead in delivering therapeutic group work programmes as required.

6. Administer medication, complying with relevant Trust procedures and NMC Guidance.

7. Ensure the safe custody of all patients as determined by the clinical team. This includes the supervision of patients within the hospital, grounds, and the community, as required.

8. Provide clinical and managerial leadership on the ward.

9. Assess and manage ongoing risks as identified during assessment, ensuring that this is done in collaboration with patients and carers.

10. Regularly review risk factors and make changes to the management of them as necessary.

11. Continuing responsibility for the effective functioning of the clinical environment including resource management and ensuring safe staffing levels on a shift-by-shift basis.

12. Overall responsibility for setting clinical and educational standards and monitoring and maintaining these standards.

13. Regularly undertake audits of clinical activity and standards and develop plans of action to address any improvements required.

14. The post holder will be required to work within the NMC Code of Practice and professional guidelines.

15. Maintain an up-to-date level of professional competence within the specific environment.

16. Attend meetings, multi-disciplinary ward rounds, and case conferences as necessary and present information relating to patients or the service as necessary.

Person Specification

QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING

Essential Registered Nurse with NMC Post-registration experience and/or evidence of formal courses and training at post-graduate diploma level

Desirable Clinical Supervision Training Non-Medical Prescribing Qualification Recognised Psychological Interventions Training, e.g., CBT, EMDR, CAT Quality Improvement Methodology Training, e.g., LEAN Recognised Management or Leadership Qualification

Experience

Essential Significant demonstrable post-qualification experience at Band 5 working in a mental health/specialist inpatient setting Experience of developing, delivering, and evaluating specialist programmes of care and risk management plans. Evidence of successful mentoring and/or supervision of junior members of staff including students

Desirable Experience of managing a team of staff

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES

Essential Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to demonstrate diplomacy, tact, and negotiation skills. Ability to manage highly stressful and emotive situations. Current knowledge of the policy and challenges facing NHS providers. Up to date and relevant knowledge of evidence-based practice, e.g., NICE Guidance.

Desirable Project Management skills. Skills in developing policies and procedures.
