The Mann and Klein labs at the University of Bristol Veterinary School (BVS) are seeking an enthusiastic and creative individual to join their vibrant and expanding HIV-1/RNA virus research community. Funded by the Medical Research Council (MRC) and supervised by Dr Mann, the successful Research Associate will play a leading role in studying how the HIV-1 viral genome influences viral transmission and replication fitness. Specifically, the project aims to provide a more detailed understanding of what governs the viral genetic bottleneck during transmission and how the virus subsequently evolves in the host. Through this research, the project aims to generate important new knowledge in basic HIV virology and at the same time, identify novel vaccine and therapeutic targets. What will you be doing? The successful candidate will play a crucial role in designing and executing experiments within containment level 2 and 3 environments, employing a diverse array of virological, immunological, and microbiological assays. Their responsibilities will extend to data collation, organization, and analysis. Specifically, the candidate will adopt a multidisciplinary approach to investigate the role of the HIV-1 genome in transmission and replication, utilizing techniques ranging from genome recoding, Western blotting, PCR, qRT-PCR, Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR), virus infection and titration assays in cells and primary blood cells, virus transmission studies in mucosal explant tissue, flow cytometry, Luminex, ELISA, and deep gene sequencing. The Mann and Klein labs at the BVS work closely with other groups in the virology research community in Bristol, offering an enriching training environment, access to state-of-the-art techniques, locally available facilities, and equipment. Furthermore, regular gatherings with national and international collaborators enhance the research experience. As part of their ongoing professional development, the successful candidate will engage with these research teams, presenting their innovative findings. This presents an unparalleled opportunity for training, exposure to esteemed scientists and leading research teams worldwide. Minimum Requirements: You have a PhD in Microbiology and Immunology, Virology, or a related discipline. Candidates who are close to completing a PhD are also eligible to apply. You have previous experience working with models of viral infections or immunological assays. You can demonstrate a history of conducting and sharing research, as shown by publications in reputable journals and presentations at respected conferences. You have excellent writing and communication skills, can work independently but also effectively with other lab members.
