An opportunity has arisen for a Practitioner Psychologist to join our newly launching Infected Blood Psychology Service based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
This service has been funded following the Infected Blood Inquiry report's recommendation of providing a bespoke psychological support service in England for those infected and affected by the contaminated blood products. The post holder will have the exceptional opportunity to support its implementation by working as part of the regional Midlands service and by collaborating with other providers across England.
There will be numerous other psychologists working into these areas nationally and will therefore be further networking support and the exciting opportunity to collaborate with colleagues who will be simultaneously engaging with developments in these areas elsewhere. You will also be a valued colleague in our Clinical Health Psychology Service and as part of our Psychological Professionals workforce at Birmingham & Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust. This department also includes psychology provision within haematological conditions (including haemophilia) and stem cell transplantation, also working closely with the Centre for Clinical Haematology.
Main duties of the job
You will need to be able to demonstrate a highly developed understanding of the psychological challenges experienced by those infected and affected by contaminated blood products, impact of haematological conditions and how pre-existing vulnerabilities may impact upon the impact of such physical health difficulties, as well as being able to adapt your psychological interventions accordingly. With patients often being under the care of haematology services for life, specific consideration will need to be given to how to tailor psychology input accordingly, along with the ability to work flexibly across outpatient and inpatient settings.
You will have experience in working with patients with physical health conditions. You will be working closely with doctors, nurses and allied health professionals to provide high quality care, and you will need strong skills in consultation, supervision and teaching as part of our multidisciplinary teamwork.
This role will require face-to-face work, as well as skills in being able to deliver psychological assessment, interventions and teaching in a variety of formats, including via the telephone and video link.

The applicant will ideally have some experience working with blood borne conditions but our principal aim is to recruit a psychologist with ability and a commitment to develop a gold-standard service for patients and relatives in a holistic way given the uniqueness of issues related to the contaminated blood scandal. You would be working under the leadership of an 8B Psychologist lead (already appointed) and alongside an Assistant Psychologist, as well as being linked in with a regional navigator role attending to more social needs.

HCPC registration as a Practitioner Psychologist.
Desirable
Training and qualifications in research methodology, staff training, health psychology and/or other fields of applied psychology that may be relevant in a clinical health psychology setting. Pre or post-qualification training or additional qualifications in an accredited Cognitive Behavioural Therapy or other psychological therapy including CFT, ACT, DBT, MBT, brief psychodynamic interventions, systemic therapy, CAT, EMDR.

Experience of working as a qualified clinical/counselling/health psychologist, including demonstrable experience within people affected by physical illness. Experience of psychological assessment and treatment of clients across the full range of care settings, including outpatient, community, primary care and inpatient settings. Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course and presenting with the full range of clinical severity across the full range of care settings including outpatient, community, primary care, inpatient and residential care settings including maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse. Experience of teaching, training and/or professional and clinical supervision.
