The NIHR Devices for Dignity HealthTech Research Centre (HRC)

is a nationally funded resource established to address areas of unmet clinical need. Hosted by Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, it has received £3m from the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) to establish this new centre.

Mission:

To develop innovative health technologies for people with long-term conditions, preserving their dignity and independence.

Launched on April 1, 2024, the NIHR Devices for Dignity HRC will be one of 14 HealthTech Research Centres across England. It will replace the successful NIHR MedTech and In Vitro Diagnostic Co-operatives (MIC), building on 15 years of experience in medical technology development.

The HRC will focus on developing technologies for long-term neurological conditions, diabetes, kidney care, and rehabilitation. It will also play a key national role in improving women's health technologies and addressing mental health aspects associated with long-term conditions.

This clinician-led collaboration brings together healthcare professionals, patients, academia, and industry partners from across the country. It includes universities and NHS Trusts in Cambridge, Coventry, Leeds, London, Manchester, Rotherham, and Doncaster, as well as Sheffield's universities. The HRC will identify unmet needs, generate evidence, and accelerate new technologies into clinical practice.
