We have a new opportunity for a therapist working in hand therapy (Physiotherapist or Occupational Therapist) looking to enhance their skills, within an innovative Musculoskeletal Therapy Team.

The post holder will be well supported by a friendly team including Highly Specialist Hand therapist and Musculoskeletal Physiotherapists. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to further develop their clinical and non-clinical skills within hand therapy.

The Homerton's award-winning wider MSK teams consist of: GP and Consultant referred outpatient Physiotherapy service Post-orthopaedic surgery rehabilitation, sports medicine, musculoskeletal ultrasonography, virtual fracture and persistent pain clinics, non-medical prescribers Close working relationships with Radiology, Rheumatology, Orthopaedics, Podiatry and Emergency Medicine

There is regular clinical supervision and in-service training programmes, and further individualised training is also supported.

Main duties of the job

Main duties include: Perform specialist Hand therapy assessment and treatment of patients with both Traumatic, acquired and post-surgical hand conditions, providing a diagnosis and developing and delivering an individualised treatment programme, utilising a variety of therapeutic modalities. Set rehabilitation goals for patients and evaluate using appropriate outcome measures. Provision of hand therapy for patients referred directly from two specialist hand consultants, fracture clinic, and rheumatologists. Communicate effectively with patients and carers, using a range of verbal and non-verbal communication strategies/tools, to gain informed consent, to progress treatment and rehabilitation programmes and to manage patient expectations. Liaise with colleagues and other agencies to ensure effective planning of patient care.

Person Specification

Education / Qualifications

Essential

Degree/Diploma in Physiotherapy/ Occupational Therapy, HCPC.

Desirable Relevant postgraduate courses/training/CPD - Member of BAHT, BAHT Level 1 and 2.

Knowledge

Essential Knowledge/understanding of confidentiality issues. Musculoskeletal/ hand therapy clinical knowledge. Awareness of clinical audit and evidence-based practice. Knowledge of principles of risk management.

Desirable Knowledge of current professional and NHS issues, diverse multicultural society. Awareness of impact of socioeconomic factors on health. Knowledge of appraisal cycle.

Experience

Essential Specific Hand therapy clinical experience. Experience managing a wide range of hand/ upper limb conditions. Maintaining relevant range of CPD activities.

Desirable Experience of working within a diverse socioeconomic/multicultural society. Experience of working in different health care environments.

Skills/ Abilities

Essential Able to manage caseload and to prioritise under pressure. MDT working. Able to demonstrate effective written & verbal communication skills, report writing. Ax & implement appropriate Rx for a range of patients. Clear, concise verbal and written reporting skills. Good IT skills including word processing and use of email. Problem-solving skills.

Desirable Supervision/appraisal (PTA,St,Physio/OT), presentation skills.
