We are looking for an energetic and enthusiastic Director of Public Health who is passionate about our vision of making Sandwell a healthier place to live and work. Reporting into the Executive Director of People with a dotted line to the CEX, the Director of Public Health will be responsible for determining the overall vision and objectives for public health in the Borough of Sandwell. They are accountable for delivering public health objectives and reporting annually on the outcomes and future work. Sandwell is one of the most deprived boroughs in the country with high degrees of health inequality. This role will be front and centre in addressing the challenges we have and helping in improving the lives of all our residents. This post requires specialist public health leadership and an appropriate span of responsibility to deliver health protection, health improvement and advice on health services. The post holder will also need to ensure that the impact on health is considered in the development and implementation of all policies. You will prepare, manage and monitor the service's budget and you will ensure effective leadership, motivation and development of staff. On a regular basis you will review resources, services and partnership arrangements in order to identify opportunities to improve service delivery.

To be successful in this role you will need previous high-level management experience in a local authority or health service role. You will need to have an acute understanding of the link between economic success and good health and build this into your strategy for tackling and prioritising public health issues. A good understanding and experience of working on the government's levelling up programme would be essential. You will be expected to formulate a clear, targeted long-term strategy that ensures health and social care, education, housing, jobs and economic policies and infrastructure, and communities, community assets and the third sector are shaped in ways which deliver maximum improvements in health and wellbeing. You will need excellent decision-making skills and the ability to lead others and inspire positive change. It is critical that you have high level communication and negotiation skills and you can use these to develop strong working relationships both internally and externally. You will be required to hold: Inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register / GDC specialist list or UK Public Health Register Must meet minimum CPD requirements in accordance with the Faculty of Public Health requirements or other recognised body Public health specialty registrar applicants who are not yet on the GMC specialist register/GDC specialist register in dental public health/UKPHR must provide verifiable signed documentary evidence that they are within 6 months of gaining entry at the date of interview; all other applicants must provide verifiable signed documentary evidence that they have applied for inclusion on the GMC/GDC/UKPHR specialist registers
