The role The School of Computer Science at the University of Bristol is seeking to grow our thriving and talented AI community. We have a long-standing track record for world-leading AI, Machine Learning and Computer Vision, and recent successes place us at the forefront of UK AI research and teaching, as recognised by being awarded AI University of the Year 2024. We host Isambard AI, the UK's first national AI supercomputing facility, lead two of the UK's nine National AI Research Hubs (in Collective Intelligence and Information Theory), run a Centre for Doctoral Training in Practice Oriented AI, and have launched an innovative undergraduate degree in Computer Science with AI. In addition to this post, we are making further hires to strengthen our talented AI research teams at both established and early career levels.

Bristol's world-class AI research spans applied and theoretical work in intelligent agents, machine learning, machine vision, reasoning, and problems in multimodal and interactive AI. We solve interdisciplinary challenges in collaboration with researchers in environmental and life sciences, creative technologies, and robotics, and hold joint appointments with industry including Google Deep Mind and Amazon. We encourage applicants from any area of AI and are specifically interested in candidates that reinforce our existing strengths and those that bring new kinds of AI expertise.

What will you be doing? The postholder will contribute to the University's impressive record of world-leading research (as demonstrated in REF 2021 which ranked the School 7th in the UK for CS research) and to developing and delivering the School's education programmes (including our new undergraduate degree in Computer Science with AI). The School prides itself on its academic quality and its collegiality. You should apply if Candidates will have a PhD in Computer Science or a closely related discipline (or equivalent industrial experience) and a track record of publishing in top academic venues and applying for external funding appropriate to their career stage. The potential for leadership, undertaking research collaborations with colleagues from top international labs, and collaborating on impactful translation of ideas with relevant industrial partners is desirable. The successful candidate will be able to design and deliver excellent teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level and will be committed to making the most of growing opportunities in this area.
