Our firm

We live and breathe our core values and behaviours, and support our purpose of “Helping you Prosper”. They set the tone for the team to work by and we are looking for people who value the same things as us: being present, making progress, enjoying it and living empathy.

UHY Hacker Young is a Top 25 firm of Chartered Accountants based in the centre of Chester. We are ambitious people, united in our mission to be exceptional auditors, accountants and business advisers delivering seamlessly integrated client service.

Through both our UHY UK & International network we harness global intelligence and combine this with local presence and knowledge to share technical and commercial insight.

The Partners and People at UHY Hacker Young in Chester provide a range of audit, taxation and business advisory services to a varied portfolio of clients, predominantly Owner-Managed Businesses.

As well as the affairs of some larger businesses with more complex, technical requirements.

Role overview

We are currently recruiting for an AAT qualified, or senior qualified accountant by experience, to work in our accounts department. You would be acting for clients, including limited companies and sole traders, operating in a wide range of business sectors. We have a mix of clients using Xero or other Cloud products.

An Accounts Supervisor at UHY has a hybrid role – they act as Client Managers for a portfolio of their own clients (building relationships with the clients and reporting directly to the partner) and they will assist in similar work for other managers.

Are you an ambitious qualified accountant with UK Accounts experience looking for a new challenge with a strong Nationally-recognised Firm? As a growing department we have big plans for the future.

We recognise that you and the rest of our team are essential to deliver on our purpose of “helping you prosper” whether you are a client, member of our team or part of the wider community. We want you to be challenged, have fun in the workplace, work with like-minded individuals and deliver great service.

Job description

The primary focus of the role will be both acting as principal contact for your own portfolio of clients and also supporting our team in a variety of areas, for example by tackling more complex accounts work and assisting the managers with various client-related tasks and special ad hoc assignments.

Preparation of financial statements, year-end accounts, other accounting and financial returns (VAT, Management accounts, cash flow forecasts etc).

Someone who is passionate about helping UHY clients prosper through building profitable and successful businesses.

The successful applicant will have the skills to help clients interpret their accounting data and provide innovative and long-lasting solutions to their accounting problems.

We are looking for someone who understands the benefits that cloud products, particularly Xero, can bring to our clients and who has the enthusiasm and drive to help develop the range of Xero-based and other Cloud apps and services we offer.

Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills in order to proactively engage with clients.

A strong team player who has the ability to work under minimal supervision and work closely with the manager team in driving projects forward.

All applicants must have substantial accounting experience in practice, ideally gained in a UK professional Firm, to include preparation of statutory and management accounts, VAT and bookkeeping (using Xero and Sage).

In order to meet the above criteria, we would expect candidates to be Qualified AAT or qualified by experience.

Working arrangements

The working week: 37.5 hours per week (Monday to Friday) with occasionally some flexibility of hours to meet specific work demands. Our team is essentially office-based.

Location: Your principal work base is our Chester Office. However, you may be required to spend time working at client premises.

Benefits

Study Package, including TOIL (Time off in Lieu).

25 days holiday (plus bank holidays).

Pension Scheme arrangements using a scheme of your choice.

Reimbursement of one professional subscription each year.

Client referral bonus for new clients introduced.

Person specifications - Experience/skills that are desirable

Act with integrity at all times.

Be approachable to members of the team and clients.

Excellent communication skills.

Love developing internal and external relationships.

Good client-facing skills.

Be able to manage your workload.

Support and provide on-the-job training to less experienced members of the team as required.

Strong personal ethics.

Professional qualifications

A recognised accountancy qualification (AAT) and/or qualified by experience.

Professional experience

To be considered for this role you must have strong experience in an accountancy practice and an enthusiasm for working with a variety of client businesses.

System experience

Ideally you will have experience in using Sage, Xero and associated apps, and CCH.
