The Advanced Biomedical Scientist role at UK NEQAS for Leucocyte Immunophenotyping involves a range of critical responsibilities. The candidate will select and prepare materials for External Quality Assessment (EQA) surveys, test and distribute these materials, and process data returns. They will prepare and distribute results and reports for EQA exercises and provide technical support to participating laboratories. Additionally, the candidate will engage in research and development projects, assist in maintaining and developing the UK NEQAS LI EQA software, and contribute to training and competency monitoring within the department. To excel in this role, candidates should have a strong background in flow cytometry. Essential skills include excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities, meticulous attention to detail, and the capacity to handle complex data. Strong communication skills are necessary to provide technical support and training to national and international laboratories. Familiarity with accreditation standards, such as ISO 17043 or ISO 15189, is required. This position requires someone who is committed to maintaining high standards of quality and safety, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and responsibilities efficiently. By coming together as a single service, SYB Pathology will ensure all patients and clinicians across the ICS footprint receive equitable access to high quality, innovative pathology services, providing the best clinical outcomes. The partnership will ensure SYBP improves health outcomes, drives research and innovation, delivers efficiencies, and ensures a sustainable workforce, providing job satisfaction and career progression opportunities for all staff. UK NEQAS LI provides EQA to over 2500 laboratories worldwide from over 50 countries. The aims of the department are primarily educational, promoting standardisation of both UK and international clinical laboratories undertaking flow cytometric Immunophenotyping and molecular haemato-oncology. It has close links with the Department of Haematology at the Sheffield Royal Hallamshire Hospital and the University of Sheffield, as well as international collaboration with organisations such as the NIH in Bethesda, USA, the National Measurement Laboratory, National Institute of Biological Standards and Controls, European LeukaemiaNet, International Society of Laboratory Haematology, and the World Health Organisation. BSc in Biomedical Sciences MSc in Biomedical Sciences A current and valid Biomedical Scientist registration certificate issued by the UK health and care professions council (HCPC) Experience
Discipline specific NHS experience in a UKAS accredited laboratory (Microbiology/Virology/Histopathology/Blood sciences laboratory) Skills and Knowledge
High level of technical and analytical skill including troubleshooting with complex systems including IT Broad practical, analytical and theoretical knowledge of flow cytometry Knowledge of ISO 15189 and/or 17043 systems Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) Knowledge of molecular genetics Previous work for an EQA programme Specialist knowledge (either technical or scientific/clinical) in haemato-oncology and/or primary/secondary immunodeficiency disorders Ability to implement new technologies and developments into service provision Ability to supervise a service, or small groups of services, and meet tight deadlines where results may have an impact upon the delivery of a quality clinical service Ability to manage technical staff in relation to clinical service Ability to deliver training Personal Qualities
