The Royal Marsden Private Care has made significant investment in developing new ways of working for senior cancer nurses as Advanced Nurse Practitioners (ANP) in Private care. With the expansion of our private care services in Sutton, a new opportunity has arisen for a new ANP to join the PPMDU. With mentor support (nursing and medical), the ANP will integrate into the existing ANP/Specialist Doctor team working as an autonomous practitioner to carry out extended roles.

A fundamental part of the ANP role will be to undertake routine advanced physical assessment of the day care SACT patients including assessing these patients prior to each treatment using thorough history taking, clinical examination, arranging relevant investigations (e.g. blood tests, radiographs), prescribing SACT and other supportive medications. The ANP will also have skills in the early detection and intervention of clinical deterioration in existing or new medical conditions. The post is intended to provide improved outcomes for patients by improving services and quality. It is essential that you are currently a Registered Nurse with the NMC and you will be required to have extensive post registration experience in oncology/haematology care. Advanced clinical knowledge and skills are required to work as a core member of the team, working autonomously is essential.

Main duties of the job Clinical leadership to the nursing teams, maintaining credibility through practice and provide a high quality and safe patient service, which exceeds patient expectations. Routine management of the day care patients assessing them for systemic anti-cancer treatments (SACT) and supportive therapies. Using advanced clinical decision making and assessment skills, prompt treatment plans or referrals will be initiated to effectively manage acute and chronic cancer-related complications and/or toxicities from systemic anti-cancer treatments and/or radiotherapy.

Job responsibilities The ANP will undertake routine advanced physical assessment of the day care SACT patients including assessing these patients prior to each treatment using thorough history taking, clinical examination, arranging relevant investigations (e.g. blood tests, radiographs), prescribing SACT and other supportive medications, and arranging appropriate follow up, when necessary. Presenting and attending PPMDU Consultant rounds preparing SACT clinic and Outpatient lists in conjunction with the team. To provide support and advice to nursing, medical and allied health professionals therapy staff in relation to the management of the SACT patient. To provide support and advice to patients and their carers relating to their chemotherapy and any procedures. To obtain informed consent from patients prior to starting their first chemotherapy cycle and ongoing cycles. Using assessment skills and advanced clinical decision making to formulate a diagnosis, prompt treatment plans or referrals will be initiated to effectively manage acute and chronic cancer-related complications and/or toxicities from systemic anti-cancer treatments and/or radiotherapy.

Experience Essential

Significant post registration nursing experience in oncology or speciality to be confident and competent in using the required skills to do the job. Recognised Advanced Nurse Practitioner skills including advanced assessment skills, electing and recommending appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic management. Excellent understanding and experience in the recognition and management of oncological emergencies. Current experience in managing the deteriorating oncology patient, including the safe transfer of patients. Experience in a large complex organisation and/or NHS. Knowledge of the Acute Oncology Service and related DH guidelines. Good understanding of the clinical and non-clinical aspects of an International service model. Experience of change initiatives within and operational and clinical team. Experience of managing projects involving clinicians and track record of successful engagement with clinical leaders.

Skills Abilities/knowledge Essential

Evidence of effective interpersonal skills with particular ability to liaise with multidisciplinary team members. Ability to make decisions, prioritise and work under pressure. Knowledge and understanding of quality issues. Evidence of understanding the national policy. Computer Literacy (e.g., Microsoft Word and Outlook). Able to lead Root Cause Analysis investigations to facilitate staff in identifying and embedding areas for improvement in the provision of high quality and safe care. Able to manage multiple and complex projects including tracking of plans and actions. Able to present confidently and persuasively to small and large groups. Able to present complex information appropriately to the Trust's Governance Committees. Ability to lead audit activities to assess and monitor the quality of care. Implement change based on the findings.
