Alcohol Nurse Specialist

Location: Whitehaven

Job offered by: NHS
·
North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust 37.5 full time hours but a minimum of 30 hours would be considered.

Alcohol excess plays a significant role in a wide array of health and social care needs, impacting the whole health economy. A significant and rising number of patients with alcohol-related problems attend our Emergency Departments, with 81% presenting via our ambulance services. Many may subsequently be admitted, leading to a high re-attendance and readmission rate, alongside a higher than average alcohol-related mortality.

Consequently, there is a case for improvement in the provision of alcohol-related services and better coordination of care with our community providers. The North East and North Cumbria ICS support the development of alcohol services, and NCIC has made a successful bid for funding to support Alcohol Care Teams. We invite enthusiastic nurses to support the Trust in raising the profile of alcohol-related problems and engage teams to enable interventions, acting as a conduit to community-based alcohol services.

There is an opportunity for a 6-month fixed term contract with the potential to extend within the Alcohol Care team.

Main duties of the job The aim of Alcohol Care Teams (ACTs) is to:

Reduce avoidable alcohol-related hospital admissions by mitigating severe health risks among dependent drinkers.

Reduce the length of stay for inpatients by improving the management of withdrawal.

Provide appropriate, timely, meaningful education and support for those attending or being admitted with alcohol-related problems.

Facilitate integrated alcohol care between secondary, primary, and community care providers, offering an alternative to admission.

Provide psychosocial interventions to support dependent drinkers in sustaining abstinence following discharge.

Improve compliance with the Trust's alcohol withdrawal guidelines.

Educate staff on alcohol use disorder and its management.

Enhance information sharing between services (e.g., secondary care, primary care, and community services).

Improve data collection and opportunities for analysis.

About us At NCIC, we aim to deliver outstanding hospital and health services to half a million people. Established on 1st October 2019, the Trust is creating a centre of excellence in providing rural and remote healthcare and offers a wide range of community and acute services throughout north Cumbria and beyond. We're responsible for delivering over 70 services across 15 main locations and employ more than 6,500 members of staff.

Our 5 key principles demonstrate our belief in delivering 'safe, high-quality care every time':

Being a clinically led organisation.

Quality and safety at the heart.

A positive patient experience every time.

A great place to work.

Managing our money well.

We are committed to supporting a diverse workforce that reflects our local community and focus on being an inclusive and compassionate place to work.

Across the North East and North Cumbria, we are working together to deliver our ambition to be the greenest region in England by 2030. All staff are expected to support sustainability.
