Job Description: Discover will not sponsor or transfer employment work visas for this position. Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United Kingdom on a full-time basis.

As an Application Engineer, you’ll analyze, develop, and design solutions for our application software. In our Agile environment, you’ll do this by performing technical design, coding with test automation, support, and documentation of software application modifications. Ultimately, through continuous integration, development, and testing, you’ll ensure we deliver quality code. Actively manages and escalates risk and customer-impacting issues within the day-to-day role to management.

Responsibilities

Analyze, design, program, test, and deploy new user stories and features with high quality (security, reliability, operations) to production.

Help junior engineers by providing learning tasks as well as work-related tasks, directing the work of junior engineers, and helping them continue to grow.

Achieve team commitments (and influence others to do the same) by using informal leadership & highly developed communication skills.

Have oversight on design decisions and guide the team to achieve key results for products assigned to them.

Remediate issues using engineering principles and create proactive design solutions for potential failures.

Contribute to and lead technology communities at Discover.

Minimum Qualifications

At a minimum, here’s what we need from you:

Bachelors in Computer Science or related field.

Information Technology, (Software) Engineering, or related field.

Internal applicants only: technical proficiency rating of competent on the Dreyfus engineering scale.

Preferred Qualifications

Bonus Points If You Have:

Experience working in a highly complex and scaled global technology organization.

Time spent working for an organization in either the Financial Services or Payments Technology.

You are competent & confident in multiple programming language types – scripting, OO, functional.

You have hands-on experience of implementing CI/CD pipelines and advocacy of a "you build you run it" culture.

Core Java.

Spring framework (core, integration, boot, webflux, etc.).

Microservices.

Openshift and Kubernetes.

AWS Cloud.

REST APIs, JSON, Contract Testing.

Test Driven Development (TDD), Behaviour Driven Development (BDD).

UNIX/Linux (command line and shell scripting). Continuous Integration/Deployment/Testing with Jenkins, Cucumber, Junit, Gatling.
