We have a vacancy for a full-time Assistant Psychologist to work on the Broadfield Unit based at the Haywood Hospital. The post is to support the Consultant Clinical Neuropsychologist and the Clinical Psychologist in providing psychological care for patients who have experienced a neurological illness or injury and are receiving specialised rehabilitation in our level 2a unit. The post holder will also be working closely with the wider MDT. The role involves contributing to the assessment, formulation, and treatment of patients with significant acquired brain injuries which may result in disorders of consciousness or behaviour that challenges. The wider team in their understanding and management of these difficulties is a key element of this role.

The post is based on a hospital ward, although agile working is expected. The post holder will receive weekly clinical supervision from a Consultant Clinical Neuropsychologist. There is opportunity for teaching, research, clinical audit, and CPD.

Main duties of the job

Core features of the role will include: Working alongside the Consultant, Clinical Psychologist, and Multi-Disciplinary Team to provide high-quality psychological formulation and intervention for patients requiring specialised rehabilitation. Providing structured interventions under the supervision of the Consultant Clinical Neuropsychologist. Working with people who have complex needs which can present/lead to challenging situations or behaviours. Administration and evaluation of appropriate assessment and screening tools, outcome measures, and cognitive assessments. Assistance with service development and evaluation.

Previous experience of working with adults with physical, cognitive, or mental health problems is essential. Previous experience of working in a multidisciplinary team would be an advantage.

Job responsibilities

Assist in the delivery of neuropsychologically-informed rehabilitation on the specialised rehabilitation unit of the Haywood Hospital. The post-holder will work under the supervision of the Consultant Clinical Neuropsychologist. The post holder will be expected to deliver test materials and to be able to concentrate for long periods of time to complete assessments and writing up the results. The post holder may be required to work with clients who are highly distressed, anxious, or hostile and will experience sensitive situations on a weekly basis. The client group will include people with a range of organically induced behaviour management disorders. Working independently to a plan agreed with a qualified clinical psychologist and the unit multi-disciplinary team. To assist in clinically related administration, conduct audits and projects, collect statistics, develop audit and/or research projects, teaching, and project work. The post holder will need to be able to travel between community appointments.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential A first or upper second class honours degree or higher in psychology. Entitlement to graduate membership of the British Psychological Society.

Experience

Essential Experience of work with people with mental health problems or disabilities, or other relevant problems or disabilities (e.g., learning disabilities, organic impairment). Experience of working as an Assistant Psychologist.
